Show IS Veraal Expren Wednesday, Sept. 12, 1993 Utes on gridiron The Uintah High Football team finished preseason at 1-2 following a disheartening loss to the Moffat County Bulldogs from Craig, Colorado 6-0, in what is becoming a heartbreak year early for the local team. The Utes to date 1990 are earning the name of a good solid defensive club with no weapons on offense as the offense failed to score. The "D" has allowed only three touchdowns in three games, but the offense has put up only a total of 13 points which equates to the 1-2 start. Coach Belcher, long known for putting together great defenses by virtue of his forte while at BYU, has not let the fans down with his 4-4 scheme which bends at times but has refused to break in the three games so far. Even more telling about the defense de-fense is that in every case so far this year the points scored against them have come as a result of offensive . turnovers which put them with their backs against the wall. Going into the first region game this week the Utes defense has not allowed a team to score a point on a long drive. While the defense is showing signs of greatness, led by Brian Eetcher, the offense has failed to warm up, let alone start cooking. 'The team has failed to get emotionally emo-tionally ready so far this year," said Coach Belcher when asked to comment com-ment on last weekends setback, 'The offense is just not in sync yet, the quarterback is fading back to far on the option, the line is not firing off, and the backs are not in time, but we've worked hard this week, opened some things up, and should see some improvement going to Price on Friday." It'll come around," said a coach who obviously has not paniced yet despite the two straight losses, "We've been in every game, and with a little luck could have been 3-0 3-0 at this point. That's what preseason presea-son is for, to get things together." That calming statement, rnakes one believe the coach knows what he's talking about and that things are well within tolerance. 1 r; ,, if J HA.r: CULLOCK, number 35 (far left) turns H cr. The Colorado eleven wasted no time in taking advantage ad-vantage of the takeaway as they drove for the score which was highlighted high-lighted by a 25 yard pass reception which put them inside the 10. Two plays later they got six on the ground to take the six point lead after af-ter the PAT failed. The rest of the game was a stalemate stale-mate as the fourth quarter Utes failed to repeat on the first two games where they've scored their 20 points to date. The Utes did mount several drives only to be turned away by the Dawgs. The Utes were inside the 20 yard line five times and inside the 10 twice but came away with no points. The team must now put the preseason pre-season behind them and get ready :, i i ' ' ' , s , ' - ... 1 f -t - -v - . . v. According to sources in Price, the Dinos are getting up for this one as it was the Utes who put the damper on their 1989 season in the game at Uintah last year. Coach Belcher points to this contest con-test as a key game for the Utes. "Carbon appears to be the team to beat," said Belcher, "I'm impressed with their size and they have some good people in tight end Cook and running back Ross." The coach sees the Carbon game as critical in that the Utes should beat Lehi and Emery on the road and then have a tough Wasatch team at home along side the rubbermatch with rival Union to close the season. Surprising Carbon came in second with a four man total of 345 to clip the Wasps and finish 17 behind the Utes. Carbon got a solid performance perfor-mance from King who shot 78, and Jones who came in at 84. All others on the team failed to break 90.
