Show 'Village of Widows' Pleads j For Survival 'Send Us Men' j VELJUN, YOGOSLA VIA. "Send ; us men so that we may bear children," chil-dren," the little, gray-haired woman said, voicing the collective wish of this "village of widows." Veljun's male population about 600 was massacred by the pro-Nazi pro-Nazi Ustashl late in 1941. The bodies were dumped into a ravine near a little schoolhouse where the slaughter slaugh-ter occurred. Only a handful of old men and boys were left. About a dozen men survivied the fight of resistance and the concentration camps. Their return re-turn to Veljun explains the few blond, doll-like babies found here. The women of Veljun realized that their greatest problem was survival. sur-vival. With peasant realism and patience, pa-tience, they took up the burden of work and responsibility and Veljun became a sort of cooperative matriarchal ma-triarchal society. The women have done a splendid job. They look forward with confidence con-fidence but they know they never can erase the horrible marks of the wholesale slaughter of their husbands hus-bands unless new partners arrive to help them. |
