Show Large Break In Mill Race Blocks Flooded and Big Damage Done There was a slip In the bank of tho Thatcher mill raco Just opposite Seth Langton's old residence on First South street yesterday morning about 7:30 a. m. with very damaging results. Tho wholejjottom of the tace slid out and emptied the contents of tho large canallnto the Smith lumber yard. The water spread over several blocks on the Island. The lumber yard and ware houses were covered several feet deep .with water. One family was driven from tho house and the furniture furni-ture and clothing swam In water for an hour. It tore down main street for three blocks, running cross lots, and rooting up gardens which came In its path. Boilers, tubs and lumber were carried down main for over a block by the flooding stream which was up to the wagon hub In many places? Those who will sustain the bulk of the dkaKC,wlll be the Smith Lumber company, the Logan-Junk-House, and the Canal company. It is estimated that the total damage dam-age resulting from the break will approach ap-proach 82,000. |
