Check the ads in the Vernal Express, Last Saturday night closed the 1991 Uintah County fair with a concert con-cert by recording artist and song writer Eddy Raven. The week long events are being hailed as a success. Kristen Jensen, daughter of Dr. Douglas and Roberta Jensen was crowned Miss Uintah County. She and her attendants, Lori Barlow and Emily Long, reigned over and participated par-ticipated in all the events. The annual baby contest was Tuesday with the upstairs of the mezzanine at the Western Park arena are-na bustling with babies, toddlers, frantic mothers, grandmas, fathers and even a few grandpas. They were competing for the best of the best. Brenda Wilkins, chairwoman said, "There were 202 babies that participated partici-pated this year. It is about the same as last year." The babies were judged by three judges on six criteria: smile, manners man-ners and politeness, health and cleanliness, reactions towards others, oth-ers, appearance and the reaction to the judges. Winning babies were: (listed as queen or king and first and second attendant, respectively) 0-6 months, girls, Tasia Stubbs, Tiffany Justice and Makenzie Gross; 0-6 months, boys, Levi Thoene, Jace Johnson and David Wilkins; 7-12 months, girls, AnnDee Adams, Janessa Curtis and Jordon Ashley Tripp; 7-12 7-12 months, boys, Matthew Timothy Sineros, James Juarez and Tucker Reardon; 13-18 months, girls, Sara Ann Shockey, Riliegh Workman and Elizabeth Murray; 13-18 months, boys, Cody Allen Cauble, Jorry McManigal and Colby Smuin; 19-24 months, girls, Alissa Priebe, McKenzy Simper and Charmaine Reed; 19-24 months, boys, Kody Hagele, Anden Merkley and Bryon Caldwell; 2 year old, girls, Megan Searle, Kelsi Robb and Marinda Gilroy; 2 year old, boys, Jacob Bloxham, Justin Fouts and Brady Workman; 3 year old, girls, Brandi Miller, Chelsea Roth and Aubra Whitmore; and 3 year old boys, Jeremy Lind, Thomas McCurry and Dustin Adams. Home arts and crafts and 4-H exhibits ex-hibits were set up in the conference room at the Western Park. Judging was done by local experts in the different dif-ferent categories ranging from painting, photography, floral arrangements ar-rangements and cut flowers, fruits and vegetables, quilts and hand made crafts, sewing and many entries en-tries of foods, including home canned items. Dan Thacker was the chairman, of the open rabbit and poultry show on Thursday through Saturday. Trophies were given to winners on Saturday when the participants picked their fair entries up. In the rabbit division: meat (respectively, (re-spectively, first to fifth place), Nathan Crozier, Donna Massey swept second through fifth place; fur, Josh Horrocks, Chardel Massey, Staci Kcllersberger, Laurie Kellersberger and Staci Kellersberger, fancy, Chardel Massey took first through third, Stan Gudmunsen and Chardel Massey. The Grand Champion was a black New Zealand rabbit entered by Nathan Crozier. In the fowl division: chickens (respectively, (re-spectively, first to fifth place), Jason Heath, Tracey Gudmunsen, Stan Gudmunsen, Bob Molina and Josh , Horrocks; game birds, Larry and Steven Moon swept first through third, Jessie Rowell and Miles Hanberg; other- fowl, Mindy Molina, Jessie Rowell, Mindy Molina and Jessie Rowell. There was no fifth place given in the other fowl category. .The Grand Champion was a red golden pheasant pheas-ant entered by Larry and Steven Moon. Thursday night 14 individuals and groups performed in the Western Park amphitheater during the Uintah County local talent show. Chairperson Tammy D. Meacham, KNEU radio personality, closed the show with her rendition of Lee Greenwood's song, "I'm Proud to be an American" after the Ute Tribe Dancers performed a Native American dance to the flag. The song and dance was dedicated to Desert Storm veterans and "...was done to show unity regardless of color. This gave an opportunity for all cultures to unite, and we have several different cultures in the Basin," Meacham said. Performing for the audience Thursday night were, Terri Lance, the Hi Uinta Harmony, Hi Uintah Coggers, Hal Massey, Kay Hunting and Enola Hall, Dee Bambrough, n Clogging Trio Dancers, Amy Richins, a first place winner at the 4-H talent find earlier in the week, Dick Ufford with his poem called "Cowboy's Airplane," Mandi Hunting, Lori Tellefson and Showdown winners, Marty Combs, Serria Blue and Kerry McKinnon. Meacham said, "We have great local lo-cal talent in the Basin and the Basin is full of it I am amazed at the amount of vocal talent there is." During an intermission, Bill Rasmussen, board of director of the Soil Conservation service, recognized recog-nized Floyd Workman as "Rancher of the Year." Workman was given a plaque in recognition of his ranching ranch-ing practices on Diamond Mountain. According to Rasmussen, Workman practices proper grazing and has a grazing plan on all of his pastures. He grazes more animals (deferred rotation grazing system) and still has plenty of feed and water wa-ter for wildlife. He has achieved this by installing fences and has participated partici-pated in, brush control and spring developments creating improved forage available. Sherrie Gardner, AUean Foley and David Feltch were in charge of the Homemade Pie Baking Contest and the Homemade Ice Cream Contest that was on Saturday in the east kitchen of the park. In the pie baking contest youth fruit division, Emily Foley placed first with a fresh raspberry pie, Kristie Gordon placed second for an apple zucchini pie and Nikki Robbins placed third with a French apple pie. In the youth cream division, Kristie Gordon placed first with a Banana Coconut Cream pie. In the adult division, Nora R. Gordon placed first with a Pear pie and Dorraine Robbins placed second sec-ond with a Cherry Surprise pie. The Homemade Ice Cream winners win-ners are Sue Mantle, first place with Country Vanilla Ice Cream, Carl Foley placed second with Fruit Ice Cream and tying for third place was Herb and. Sharron Shaeffer, Shaeffer's Candy Bar Lover's Delight, and Addie Snow with her no cook Peach Ice Cream. Judges and audiences were able to try both delicious treats together after af-ter the winners were announced. "Hocus! Pocus! Chicken bones will choke us," was the magic word at the fair on Kid's day. Kid's Day featured two magical clowns from Salt Lake City, Hoopsie and Tick-Tock. These clowns with their funny clothes, colorful hair and big, happy smiles entertained the children for hours with balloons that were made into animals, swords or hats. Hoopsie and Tick-Tock also performed a magic show that all children were able to participate in. Children were also able to dig through a treasure chest, spray paint hats, fish in the fish pond, get their faces painted, participate in races and enjoy cookies and punch. Closing the fair was the Utah State True ValueGMC Truck Country Showdown finals. The Uintah County Fair committee commit-tee hosted the Raven concert. Evans and Fabrizio, separately, expressed -their concerns about the quality of sound that was produced from the acoustics within the indoor arena where the Raven concert and Showdown were held. "I feel bad about the acoustics in the building during the Eddy Raven concert. It was not the fault of the sound designer, de-signer, Ed Pratt," Fabrizio said. "Pratt is the sound designer at Symphony Hall in Salt Lake City," Evans added. Summing up the success of the Uintah County Fair, Fabrizio said, "It has been wonderful to be chairperson chair-person of the fair for the last three years. The Western Park made a real difference in the success of the fair. The help (personnel) certainly lightened light-ened my burden."
