For several months, the church has been without a leader but the members of the congregation congrega-tion have been taking on the duties of temporary minister until Matthews arrived. The Matthews' moved to Vernal from Bedford, Texas. Aug. 1. Prior to retiring from the U.S. Navy, Samuel lived in Salt Lake City where he ministered, among others, to inmates at the Utah State Prison in Draper. He also hosts a 15 minute bible radio show on station KBBXAM. He still hosts the show by sending tapes daily to the station. sta-tion. Matthews said that he has always al-ways liked Utah and after sending out inquiries to different congregations congrega-tions within the Church of Christ, found that the Vernal church needed a minister. Samuel and his wife, America, have four children: Walter, who is currently serving in the U.S. Navy; Winona, 17, who will be a senior attending Uintah High School; Samuel II, 13, who will attend Vernal Jr. High; and Lydia, 11, who will attend Vernal Middle School. Samuel graduated from a ministry school in Bedford in June of this year. He was raised as a Baptist and after entrance into the Navy at age 19, began studying the Bible and eventually became a Christian. He has served two missions in South Africa and also in Mexico, among others. He says that Vernal is his first full time ministry. "I'm here to spread the word of God," Matthews explained. Bible study at the Church of Christ is conducted at 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. on Sunday with worship services from 11 a.m. until noon. A worship service is also held on Wednesday nights at 7 p.m. Matthews is leading a series on the "be-attitudes," taking one verse at a time and examining it, on Sunday nights from 6:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. NEWS ITEMS call your Hometown Newspaper , Vernal Express 789-3511 Brian Stagg Brian Stagg receives Eagle Scout honors In a special Court of Honor on July 28, Brian Stagg, son of Marland and Betty Stagg, received his Eagle rank from the Boy Scouts of America.
