In one of the closest finishes ever, six different teams tied after nine holes with a 31 total forcing a sudden sud-den death shoot out. Each team picked a player to hit the tee shot on number nine and the closest ball to the pin won. The six teams and their members were: 8 -Jeff Davis, Brent Kallevig, Scott Monson, Dode Rolfe and Jim Abegglin. 5 Ryan Mott, Devin Bailey, Jeff McLain, ' Mike Weldon and Barb Thorne. 10 Fern Baker, Lola Anderson, Gary McCartney, Levi Smuin Sr. and Dave Stanger. 6 Jeremy Fountaine, Levi Smuin Jr., Lamar Hawkins, Mary Smuin and Russel Byrne. 7David Cox, Tobe Wilkins, Glenda Brown, Ilene McLean and Mike Johnson. 9 Derik Mowry, Joann Caldwell, Becky Larson, Bill Murray and Mike Garcia. After all the teams had collected at number nine tee and with the rest of the teams and a sizable gallery looking on from the top of number nine, the players prepared to hit their shots. The only problem was, there was very little light and nobody no-body could tell how close the balls were or even see the green. After the shots had all been hit, the players, spectators and other team members rushed up to see who had won. Two of the shots were so close that a tape, measure was required. And the winner? David Cox and his team by inches. The winning team members received $30 each while the other five teams who tied for second each received $10 apiece. Tennis The County Fair tennis tournament tourna-ment began last Monday with the largest and most diversified field ever. Over 50 players entered the tournament ranging in age from 8 (Kit Wallis) to 50 (we cannot disclose dis-close that name at this time!). The players competed in any combination com-bination of seven different divisions including men's and women's singles sin-gles and doubles, men's intermediate intermedi-ate singles and doubles and a brand new division parentchild doubles. Needless to say several very interesting inter-esting matches took place during the week long competition. Eleven year old Breanne Pye played in the women's open against Coach Gene Wilcken. Several of the boys and girls tennis team members played against their coaches and each other. Moms played with sons (and grandsons) and dads played with daughters and vice versa. In the men's open singles, Shane Bullock defeated former teammate Courtney Nelson 6-4, 6-0 to take the championship. Bullock defeated his former Coach (Eric Pye) in one of the semi-finals 4-6, 6-0, 6-1 while Nelson defeated another of the tennis coaches (Bruce Haines) in the other semi 7-6 (7-3), 7-5. i" - i 11 YEAR old Breanne Pye playing play-ing against Coach Wilcken. It wasn't a good day for "old men" as they both lost to "youngsters". In the men's doubles, Bullock and! Nelson combined to go undefeated in a round robin format defeating HatchPye, HainesKlein and Enloe and Enloe without dropping a set. In the women's draw, Karen Bullock upset perennial champion Rose Bigelow in one of the semi's 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 to make it to the finals while the other side was still being contested with Kristina Murphy beating teammate Lori Mansfield 6-4, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 to face Jean Wilcken who had beaten Breanne Pye 6-2, 6-2 6-2 in the quarterfinal. In the doubles, the team of BigelowSalazar proved too tough for the other teams in the round robin as they overcame MurphyMansfield, Wilcken (Kristi)Mayer and B ullock(Tiffany)Madsen. In the men's intermediate, two up and coming youngsters breezed through the draw without dropping a set to battle it out for the championship. champi-onship. Freshmen Josh Romney and Steve Murphy played for over two hours to decide who had bragging rights for the Basin and it took all of that time to determine a winner. Both young men played superbly, hitting a variety of shots and using several strategy changes during the match. Murphy finally emerged victorious , with a 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 decision. The same two combined to form an unbeatable combo as they whipped the teams of Pye (Dustin)Mortensen (Marty), Enloe (Parker)Wilcken (Eric) and Wes and Adam Madsen. In the parentchild division, play will be concluded this week as WallisWallis, EnloeEnloe, PyePye, BigelowMcClean, ' WilckenWilcken and BullockBullock compete in an eight game pro-set, round robin format. for-mat. This division proved to be very popular as entire families were able to come out, cheer and play together. to-gether. Parents are allowed to play with different children in each match.
