Thats the day they will be collecting food for those less fortunate while making their appointed rounds. Utahns are being asked to participate by placing food in a bag near their mailbox prior to mail delivery on Saturday, May 13. All food will be distributed to local food banks whose shelves are traditionally bare this time of year. Last year Utah letter carriers collected over 500,000 pounds of h to provide over 160,000 meals for hungry Utah children and adults. Statistics show that children eat 60 percent ofall meals provided by the food bank, and that 40 percent of all meals are provided to the working poor. An estimated 30 million people go hungry every day in America, including more than 12 million children. non-perishab- food-enoug- le As letter carriers we see everyday the faces of hungry children looking for help, and the sad eyes of their parents looking for hope, said Tom McPartland, Salt Lake City Letter Carrier and President of Branch 111 of the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC), On Food Drive Day letter carriers are energized by the Opportunity we have to make a difference. We know our efforts will feed these kids and put hope in the hearts of their parents. This is a day of joy, excitement, and selfless service. Last year, 58.4 million pounds of food was collected nationwide.
