Show r SL CC remembers f George Johnson ir y r 14 I i x N T A b b q y A 3 George Henry Johnson December January 23 George Henry Johnson so professor of Architectural r Technology Technology Technology Tech Tech- died Monday afternoon J Jan 23 1989 of a massive heart att attack ck on a a handball court ourt at the Deseret Gym w where ere h he had enjoyed many hours He was with his son Blake at the time His enjoyment of that which is good in life and his drive for excellence ex excellence ex- ex x- x in n all his pursuits were eclipsed only by his love of Jesus sus Christ and his family He dedicated his life in service to others to Beverly Rosalind Susan Linda and Blake and to his grandchildren of whom he was was very proud George was wa born Dec 31 1923 in Chicago IlL and moved to Ogden Utah when he was 13 with his p parents Annie Kap Johnson and Folke Johnson A graduate of Ogden High School School he he turned down an offer to play professional baseball before joining the US Marine Corps He served in combat in the South Pacific from 1943 1946 After military sevi service e he attended the University of California at Berkeley and the University of Utah receiving a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Architecture Magna Cum Laude in 1952 and a Bachelor of Architecture Cum Laude in 1953 He Q 4 was elected to membership in the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society and has been a member of the American Institute of Architects since 1950 His commitment to excellence in design is reflected In each of the architectural projects undertaken during his career Since 1972 he has served as a faculty member and full professor sor in the Department of f Architectural Design Technology at where he be taught principles of design and excellence to hundreds of students George has dedicated his servi service e as a member of the he Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Latter Saints to t teaching aching He also served t his l of the Chamber of Commerce Commerce Commerce Com Com- community as s president ent Junior merce the Utah Tennis Association and the Classroom Teachers Teacher's Association On the handball court George was a perennial state champion champion champion cham- cham pion winning state tournament championships even after he turned 50 He is considered to be one of the best amateur handball handball handball hand- hand ball players ever to play in Utah He completed the St. St George Marathon with his daugh daughters ers Rosalind and Susan u an at the age of 5 54 While in high school George met Bever Beverly y L. L Stephens of r r Ogden They were married on Sept 1 1948 in the Salt Lake IDS t. t Temple They have haye four children Rosalind Ann Mrs G. G Paul Pau Willey Susan Lynn Mrs Thomas Thoma's A. A Ellison Linda Belle Mrs James M.
