Show Disabled student slips on ice y Lisa Keene Horizon Feature Editor On Tuesday Jan 17 a disabled disabled disabled dis dis- student slipped and fellon fellon fell fellon on the ice covering the parking parking parking park park- ing lot behind the Business Building and suffered a broken shoulder Judith Williams an accounting accounting accounting ac ac- ac- ac counting major arrived at school around 8 am a.m. and tried to park in the handicapped handicapped handicapped hand hand- spaces on the north northside northside northside side of the building All four spaces were filled by cars with no handicapped stickers or license plates Consequently Williams had to park at a far meter When she started walking walk walkr ing toward the building she slipped on the ice and fell on her shoulder She was later diagnosed as having a broken shoulder She is wearing an immobilization immobilization immobilization splint and as a result she cant can't write and needs help helpin in most normal activities The c college is cooperating to a point They have submitted submitted sub suo- all of her bills to their insurance but she has ha yet to receive any money Williams contacted Governor Governor Governor Gover Gover- nor Bangerter's representative for the handicapped She was told that by law whoever maintains the premises has to provide a clear unobstructed entrance to the building to tomake tomake tomake make it accessible and ice is isan isan isan an obstruction Now they've cleared the parking lots Williams said I also went to the legislature because Brent Goodfellow who is the head of public safety and security here on campus is in inthe inthe inthe the House of tives wasn't able to get a hold of him so I went to Capitol Hill and interrupted a session of the legislature to finally come in contact with him She told him about an officer who looked at the cars parked illegally in the handicapped handicapped handicapped hand hand- zones and did nothing nothing nothing noth noth- ing about it Williams will be wear wearing ng the immobility splint for 12 to 14 weeks She undergoes painful physical therapy three times a week She estimates having 13 hours of sleep in a week since she has to sleep sitting up in a chair Williams said If I had my way I would have cars parked illegally in inthe the handicap zones towed If there were more respect for the handicapped all this wouldn't have happened Next week there will be a feature article on the respect of the handicapped s' s 1 rr 5 5 S 'S I 1 f f'S Y Y YI t e i f t j I J |
