Show Page 6 The Ogden Valley news Volume XXI Issue V June 15, 2013 Announcements Wedding Shupe - Scott Jerika Shupe and Caden Scott were united in marriage on May 15 in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Brigham City Temple. A reception was held in their honor at the home of the bride. The bride is the daughter of Jon and Loretta Shupe of North Ogden. Parents of the bridegroom are Michael and Kara Scott of Eden. He served in the Arkansas Little Rock Spanish-speaking LDS Mission and works at IFA. The new couple will live in North Ogden after their honeymoon in Park City. Pictured left are Caden and Jerika Scott Birthdays Florence Mumford Florence Smith Mumford celebrated her 90th birthday in Maui, Hawaii on May 14, 2013. She was honored by her four sons and daughter and their spouses: Jim and Kathy (Eagle, Idaho), Gary and Brenda (North Salt Lake, Utah), Rex Florence Mumford and Debbie (Huntsville, Utah), Scott and Doris (Grapevine, Texas), and Julie and Brett Wilding (Kaysville, Utah); and nine grandchildren. All seventy of her posterity sent best wishes. The weeklong celebration of her birthday at a beach-front condo in Maui included a luau, hiking, snorkeling, Hana, a dinner party, dancing, and family stories and fun! Florence was born in Huntsville, Utah to Clarence and Selma Mortensen Smith. She was Don C. Shaw Don C. Shaw of Liberty celebrated his 80th birthday May 20 with family and friends. The second of six sons, he was born May 20, 1933 in Ogden to Lawrence and Beth Shaw. He graduated from Weber High School, Weber Don Shaw College, and Utah State University. He enjoyed sports. He received the Standard-Examiner Gold Watch Award for all-around athlete at Weber High School and Weber College. He taught and coached at Mount Ogden Junior High School, Central Junior High School, and Ben Lomond High School. He the oldest of seven children. They were raised during the depression. Florence was a graduate of Weber High School, and attended Weber College, learning tailoring. She enjoyed a lifetime of sewing for herself, family, and home. She married Arthur Mumford on August 21, 1942. They lived in Baltimore, Maryland. After World War II, they built a home in Sunset, Utah and later in Huntsville, Utah. A year after Art’s death in 2009, she married Carl Singleton. He passed away in 2011. Florence has a legacy of volunteering in the church, school, and community. She received honor from American Mothers Inc. as Weber County Mother of the Year in 1991. She was chosen as 2009 Pioneer Royalty, and rode in a horse-drawn carriage during the July 4th and July 24th parades. Her interest in world travel led her to visit many countries and the United States. Florence enjoys living in her own home in Huntsville, driving her car, and being independent. She likes to visit with friends, going to socials, reading, and visits from family. later became a full-time rancher, which he continues today. He married Margo Marriott March 18, 1954 in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Salt Lake Temple. He served in the Army from 1954 to 1956 in California and Puerto Rico. Their six children and spouses are Donene and Ryan Jones, Carolyn and Kevin Hogge, Frank and Paula Shaw, Lynette and Craig Oberg, Nancy and Jay Shupe, and Valerie and Dave Morby. He is also the grandfather of 28 grandchildren and 42 great-grandchildren. He has served in various callings in the LDS Church and enjoyed working with the youth. He especially has fond memories of serving as bishop of the Liberty LDS Ward. He served two missions with his wife—in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada; and in the Nauvoo LDS Temple. They also served as ordinance workers for ten years in the Ogden LDS Temple. Obituaries Ann Parkinson Cottam Harrop Ann Parkinson Cottam Harrop of Huntsville passed away May 23, 2013. She was born May 15, 1947 in Ogden, Utah to Raymond and Majorie Slater Parkinson. She grew up in Slaterville and graduated from Weber Ann Harrop High School. She married Roy Cottam in 1965; later divorced. Ann married her soul mate, Steven L. Harrop in 1987. She was a member of the LDS Church where she taught Primary and enjoyed Relief Society. Ann helped 100’s of individuals through Legacy, a suicide survivors group. She liked to read, write poetry, camp (watching the wild life), and fish; and especially enjoyed her family. She also liked to shoot pool and do genealogy. Ann is survived by her husband, Steven; children, Leslie Engelke (Clay Sanders), Lawrence Green Lawrence Leslie Green passed away peacefully on May 30, 2013 in Brigham City, Utah. He was born May 27, 1926 in Enterprise—Morgan, Utah to John Leslie and Nessa Smith Green, the fifth of six children. Lawrence married Verla Lawrence Green Meldrum in the Logan LDS Temple on May 31, 1951. They would have been married 62 years on May 31. He served honorably on the USS Yorktown CV10 during WWII as an ordnanceman obtaining six battle stars. After returning home, he attended Utah State University obtaining a BS degree in Vocational Education with a minor in Mechanical Engineering. He taught at the State Industrial School for one year. He and Verla moved to Brigham City in 1952 to work for the Bureau of Indian Affairs where he was the director of vocational education until he retired. He loved to shoot skeet, hunt and fish. He was gifted with his hands and loved woodworking and metalworking. He made his own boat that the family loved to use when visiting Lake Powell, Flaming Gorge, and Yellowstone Lake. He made many pieces of furniture that are in his Lynette Bennett (Rusty), and daughter-in-law Holly Cottam; two step-daughters; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister Joyce Stanger and brother Michael Parkinson. She was preceded in death by her parents, her son Ryan Cottam, sister Janice, and brother Eldon. Graveside services were held Saturday, June 1 at the West Weber Cemetery, 4592 W. 1000 N. The family met friends prior to the service at Myers Ogden Mortuary, 845 Washington Blvd. The family would like to give special thanks to Dr. Dwight Rigby and the ICU team at McKay Dee Hospital. He and Verla loved to travel in their motor home towing their Volkswagen beetle. After retirement they wintered in Yuma Arizona. He was a faithful active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He loved the gospel and studying the scriptures. Lawrence is survived by his wife, Verla, and three children: Lawren (Nancy) Green, Brigham City; Debra (Klaus) Bienek of Evergreen Park (Huntsville); and David (Merilee) Green of Brigham City; his four grandchildren, Julie Collings, Jessica Faltinowski, Kymberlee Dirkmaat, and Nicole Kelly; and his sister Amy (John) Ross. He has been blessed with six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Floyd and Earl Green; sisters Clara Oliver and Loraine Morgan; and one great-grandson, Daniel Allen. The family would like to thank Integrity Home Health, especially Joanna Jensen. Funeral services were held Wednesday, June 5 at Myers Mortuary, 205 S. 100 E. Brigham City, Utah. Interment in Brigham City Cemetery with Military Honors accorded. In lieu of flowers, the family would prefer donations to be made to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints general missionary fund.
