Letters to the Editor Wolf Creek Foundation Says “Thank You” On May 4, 2013 the Wolf Creek Foundation held its fourth annual benefit dinner and auction at Pineview Lodge at Wolf Creek. The purpose of the benefit is to raise funds for the military family retreat program that began in 2006. The program has currently served over 1,000 airmen and their families. We would like to thank all those who attended in support of this program. A great time was had by all, and over $25,000 was raised! We could not do this without the outstanding community support that we receive. Thank you to our generous sponsors for the evening—Bank of Utah, Summit Series, Weber School District Foundation, Mountain Luxury Real Estate, Rawn Hutchinson, Pat & Judy Condon, Harley & Bucks, Michael & Jennifer Belmont, Get Away Today, Rich & Kathy Peterson, Rebecca Morris, Chris & Patti Zimmerman, United Way of Northern Utah, Ken & Suzanne Crooks, Wolf Mountain, Steve & Sue Munson, Timeless Medical Spa, and Brzowski Plastic Surgery. We would especially like to thank Jeannie Wendell and her crew of volunteers for making the silent auction run so smoothly. We will be hosting our 25th family retreat June 28 through June 30, and it could not be done without such wonderful community support. If you are interested in volunteering at the next retreat, please contact Sue Munson at 801-388-7596 or 801-745-9233. Sue Munson, Executive Director Wolf Creek Foundation Scammers Prey on Elderly: Use “Medical Alert System” pretext to collect credit card information I have received several (four) calls from someone claiming to be from “Medical Alert Systems” (The “I’ve fallen and can’t get up” people.). All were picked up on my answering machine, except the last, which I answered. They claimed that someone had paid for the system for me, including shipping charges, and I was to press “1” to get my system, 5 to decline. They may be targeting seniors only, as I am a senior, or it may be a random robo-call. It is a scam aiming to get personal information, including credit card numbers. Life Alert, Medical Alert, and other similar systems do not solicit in this way. An Internet search verifies this is a scam, almost to the exact method. An Internet search shows the scam is all over the country, New York, New Jersey, Maine, W. Virginia, Michigan, North Dakota, to name a few that have reported, including fraud alerts by the legitimate companies themselves. Scammers may be just now beginning to target Utah. Matt Gephardt from Channel 2 verified that they have been receiving numerous emails concerning this scam. After receiving a fourth call, which I answered, I pressed “1.” After a long spiel about the medical alert system, I was asked for my name, address, and credit card number. They said the card would be charged $34.95 monthly for skilled technician monitoring service. I gave all fake information to see how far it would go. They tried to verify and found I was faking. My credit card number is what they wanted, they got a fake one and it was rejected. NEVER give out credit card information to anyone making a cold call. My message is to seniors . . . and everyone! Mike Roundy, Eden Misconception Breeds Fear It’s remarkable to me how misconceptions sweep fear and ire into their path, leaving understanding and compassion to tumble and fall from its force. Like many residents in Ogden Valley, I permitted my judgment of the newly opened WayPoint Academy in Huntsville to be based solely on hearsay and rumor, instead of taking the initiative to learn, on my own, what their mission and purpose is. A couple of days ago I challenged my opinion and allowed myself to be educated. I made an appointment to tour the facility and was stunned and delighted to learn that WayPoint is an educational and treatment center for young men who suffer from Agoraphobia (panic attacks), severe anxiety, and sometimes depression—subjects very near and dear to a family member who suffers from the same. At WayPoint, I met each and every boy personally as they, one by one, stood and shook my hand. These boys are not delinquents but boys, just like others in our community, but suffer from strong emotional and psychological challenges. They’re neither threatening nor “dangerous.” They are fortunate to have families with the means to enroll them in this school. I met all staff members present and was very impressed by their credentials and professionalism. These people are extremely capable and know what they are doing! One need only look at their website www.waypointacademy.com to understand what they are all about. With teenage suicide on the rise, it is facilities like these that deserve our praise and support. We are so quick to judge; it’s only human nature, but sad. I certainly learned a lesson; I hope there are more folks in our community who can do the same and give these boys and this facility the respect and encouragement they deserve. Note: Mr. Roundy made an audio recording of the scammer’s call. He was interviewed on Channel 2 News with Get Gephardt’s Matt Gephardt on the 10:00 p.m. broadcast on June 6. The complete segment can be viewed on KUTV website under “Get Gephardt.” Just scroll to the June 6 segment.
