Show 22 Vernal Expreo Wednesday, Sept. 19, 1990 Lady Utes win 1st at Lehi, 2-1 Coming off an impressive region win over Lehi, coach Colleen Hawkins feels the Utes could be ready to make their move. If the most recent contest is any indication, indica-tion, she could be right. Last Wednesday the Lady Utes engaged Lehi at home and emerged with a 15-1, 13-15, 15-5 victory. 'This was the first time we started all five seniors and the experience factor really paid off. We could have taken a straight games victory but we have been trying to give our younger players a chance to develop and learn". The seniors coach Hawkins is referring to are Carissa Barker, Amy dickson, Linda Emmett, Sherry Smuin and Jessica Wade. With soph. Amanda Wixom and Junior Brandi Natani sharing the other starting position the Utes are starting start-ing to jell as a unit. Volleyball is one of the most team oriented sports according to the coach with each member dependent upon the other and being aware of the movements and reactions each will make during the point. The most successful teams are those that are comprised of all around players who are able to set, dig, spike, serve and receive. A multitude of strategies are employed during the contest with each coach trying to find the right combination of players who will best work together as one, using substitutions, player placements and hitting strategies strate-gies best suited for those players. The Lady Utes got their first win of the season ence. In case you are wondering (as I was) what exactly experience will do for you in Volleyball, the coach was kind enough to expound for me. The jump serve is becoming a formidable weapon in girls volleyball volley-ball but is very difficult to hit with only the best players able to take advantage of it We also have a ten foot line which the back line players are not allowed to cross over and jump for balls but they are allowed to jump from behind the line to spike, block or even kill from win 4 KRISHNA MURPHY shown here in hich school tennis action at second singles. The front line players in the rotation are allowed to retreat for digging or setting but that also takes a lot of quickness, anticipation and you guessed it-experience ! The coach also explained to me that only three substitutions per player are allowed and they must substitute at the same position each time. With all of these options to consider, con-sider, coach Hawkins feels she has one big advantage over her region all 4 in iiioa effort and cotiinbutinfi at Anjlcii had tx-en asked to make a team cv hlwC by pljjing ikiuMes tip tiiud t: is tup. At number one doubles the team of Cristi Wilkcn and Joanna Mayer (a freshman and sophomore.) were bested by the senior team from Blanding 6-0, 6-3. These two arc only going to get better bet-ter the coach stated and have a fantastic fan-tastic attitude about their team and competition. At second doubles Mansfield and Erskinc kept their unblemished record intact by dispatching dis-patching Blanding 8-6 in a pro set. Then, with' everyone holding their collective breaths. Murphy pulled out the team victory with an intense and hard fought contest 6-4, 7-5 to make the final score 3-2 in favor of the Utes. Under the direction of former head coach Ron Enloc the program has made steady improvement the last three years and is now turning the comer in gaining recognition throughout the sutc as a quality and class act With the assistance of future head coach Gene Wilkcn the future is bright fc up and coming aspirant in the sport. The Utes next match will be this I'riday at home against Grand County at the High Sthixil Tennis complex.
