The entrance is located eight miles south of Highway 88 and Randlett Highway junction on the north end of Pelican Lake. The refuge now has established hours. They are one-half hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset, except during the designated hunting season, at which time the refuge hours are from one and a half hours before sunrise to one hour after sunset. There is no camping allowed on the refuge. Also all firearms must be unloaded, cased and out of immediate reach. "Out of immediate reach" means that the weapon will be behind the seat of a pickup truck or in the tool box, as in comparison to a car where the weapon should be in the trunk. Weapons in the window win-dow rack of a vehicle are considered consid-ered within reach and not cased and , will be subject to prosecution. Refuge Manager Montoya invites everyone to the refuge to observe wildlife in its natural habitat. The refuge is just one of over 450 refuges within the U.S. and Puerto Rico. The refuge's initial objective was to provide a production area for the Great Basin Canada Goose, which were documented to be nesting along the Green River. This has since been expanded to include management of the refuge for the production of all waterfowl and other oth-er water birds, as well as a migration migra-tion stop-over for all migrating birds. This area has become increasingly increas-ingly important since duck populations popula-tions have declined to record low levels, due to the drought conditions in their nesting areas. Although the refuge docs not specifically manage for residential species of wildlife, they do benefit from the management manage-ment of migratory species. The new refuge manager and his assistant are both law enforcement officers and will be patrolling more, due to problems in the past. They will also be assisted, from time to tic, by Special Agents from Salt Lake City and possibly, other states, in an attempt to let people know "wc are serious about the protection of wildlife and it's habitat." The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources has already assisted the refuge and its officers have indicated indicat-ed they will continue to assist the refuge, whenever possible. Some of the animals seen on the refuge include mule deer, golden Mglcs, bald cagtcs, ducks, Canada geese, red-tailed hawks, sandhill cranes, white-faced ibis, Lazuli buntings, blue grosbeaks, northern orioles, pheasant, pronghom antelope, ante-lope, coyotes, beaver, raccoons and ruugh lced haks.
