Show 20 Vernal Expresi Wednesday. Seat. 19, 1990 789-3511 y iisiiii 0 1 110 The Vernal Men's Golf Association held the annual Club Championships last weekend at Dinaland Golf Course and Craig Hart stood off charges by past champions Ed Gudac and Stacy Hall to defend his title and make the 1990 trophy an unprecedented seventh sev-enth title as Club Champion. On a weekend which saw unseasonably unsea-sonably hot weather on Saturday and then overcast, showers, and wind on Sunday, the scores corresponded corre-sponded with hot and cold day as well. On Saturday, Hart lead the field of 61 with a sizzling round of 68, or four under par. The average score on the day was 85.52 strokes or 13.52 over par for all players. The high round of the day totaled 105. On Sunday, cold was the password as was the day. The low round on the second and final day of the tournament tour-nament was 73, or one over par. The average round ballooned to 89.52, and the high round bulged to 116. Of course the golf pro had something some-thing to do with that as he moved the tee boxes back, reset the pins, and laughed at the weather factor as the field struggled to average rounds four strokes higher than the previous previ-ous day. For the tournament total only three eagles were recorded during the two rounds. The field fired 111 birdies, 746 pars, 786 bogeys, 374 double bogeys, and 122 other scores (that means higher than double bogey such as the dreaded triple, a snowman, or even worse some ll's, 12's, or 13's.). In winning the club championship, champi-onship, Hart added a three over 75 on Sunday for a two day total 143 which narrowly edged his cousin . (and former club champion) Stacy Hall out for the coveted title recognized recog-nized as local golf supremacy. Hall shot a 2 under 70 on Saturday and then came back Sunday with a two over 74 to finish just one shot back. In third gross was Brent Eaton who shot 69, 84 for a total 145, or two shots behind the champ. In the Championship Flight, Joe Hobbs won the net title with rounds of 71 71 good for 140. Ed Gudac shot net 71, 71 - 142 good for second sec-ond net, and Lec Schulz fired net 69, 75 - 145 which landed him in third place. In the A Flight Gary Cutler shot a net 64 (which led the club in net) on Saturday and then held on with a 73 to total 137 which won the flight by five shots. In flights A through D, the net score is considered the flight champion, where gross score reigns supreme in the Championship Flight Coming in second at 142 net Ute golfers take 3rd straight win The t-ni'-.h H;h golf team rqx-at-eJ i;h a t!.ifd Mfaij:!.t Region 7 in al C,c IiTifry County Gulf CVurc li) remain undefeated 8ml til.e a s.u.ir,!c MJ vn the rr ion u:'e. rJi io meet remaining h'f.-tc the repi tournament, Ott a vicek when fccumj ji.vc V.- ,v..h wi.t Bonner, Summcthay, s.J tv-jf rcl 10 bcA vaviy mctnixft ti I? !Jt:.tn hiww lusuTumcftt, the Vic ftiet the fc-l vt !? t sni talol t t?w? Ross fired a scratch score of 158 to win gross. In second gross, was Sam Snyder who took three strokes (81) off his opening open-ing round 84 to total 165, and third was claimed by thirteen year old golfer, Luke Caldwell who fired 80 and 90 to finish in the money as an eighth grader. B Flight was the most hotly contested con-tested of the championship as three players ended knotted at 162 scratch, with Brock Pope and Brent Cardell tied for the flight championship champi-onship at net 136. Mike Weldon, who sports a lower handicap tied scratch but lost out on the flight title by virtue of the net score and had to settle for first place gross. Pope and Cardell teed it up on number 1 to determine the championship. The sudden death playoff was short lived when Cardell pulled on out of bounds to lay three strokes off the tee. Pope hit his shot pin high about 15 feet right of the green off the tee box. Both chipped to within 15 feet and Pope sunk his par put to close out Cardell for the trophy. Cardell settled for second gross behind Weldon in the final standings. Joining the three in the winner circle cir-cle were: Levi Smuin Sr. who took 3rd gross with a 171, Jess York who fired a 140 net for second net, and John Price whose 145 net was good for third place.
