Show Worst Storm In Years Blocks Highways; Wrecks Power Lines ,s Snow Greets Eyes of Dixie's Citizens New Year's Day; Roads Blocked and Traffic Held Up During Night With the worst storm in years still in progress as the News goes to press today. Friday. Washington Wash-ington county citizens, and Utah's Dixie citizens in particular, are talking of the unusual weather." The storm closed the road to Cedar City and all northern points causing many tourists and both U. P. and Burlington busses to stop over until the roads were cleared. Snow greeted the eyes of Dixie people when they pulled up the blinds this morning. Everything was white in the valley and all of the surrounding ranges were completely covered. While light snow is falling today, the skies still give promise of more storm. Enterprise Enterprise reported that the sun was shining today. There is two feet of snow on the level and four feet in the drifts. Some difficulty was encountered in taking tak-ing cai'e of the stock back in the hills, but with the clearing skies severe losses were expected. Anderson Ranch Reports from Anderson's ranch indicate that there is twenty inches of snow on the level and that there is three feet 'at Kan-arraville Kan-arraville with less reported from that point north to Cedar City. Roads have been opened and since the wind has stopped blowing the road department is keeping them open and permitting people to travel the road. The Bur-lngton Bur-lngton bus from the south was held up here until toward evening. even-ing. It then went on to Anderson's Ander-son's ranch and later made an attempt to go through to Cedar but was reported held at Belvicw until the roads were cleared. Power Oil' The Southern Utah Power company com-pany lines went down cutting off power at about midnight Wednesday Wed-nesday night and practically the entire county was without electricity elec-tricity until close to 7 p. m. Thursday night. Due to th fact that practically all business houses and many of the homes depend entirely on .electricity for power and heat, activities were practically at a standstill. Every candle, flash light battery and coal-oil lamp was sold out as tire city prepared for a night without electricity. "What Electricity Means Now Days", was brought home to Washington county citizens when power suddenly came to light homes, turn on stoves, stokers, refrigerators, motors, etc. Second Time This was the second day without with-out power in tho past week. The first is told In another story of this issue of the News. Due to the fact that the News depends de-pends on electricity for ull equipment, equip-ment, not a wheel was turned Thursday and the paper Is being issued on New Year's Day. Bo-cause Bo-cause of the lack of power the paper has been curtailed in an effort to get it out as soon as possible. |
