Show HURRICANE MRS. KATHARINE LARSON Reporter Christmas day was happily spent by Mr. and Mrs. Lafayette Staheli and family because they had with them Mr. Staheli's aged parents, Mr. -and Mrs. John Staheli of St George. Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Graff and four children visited on Christmas Christ-mas day with Mr. Graff's father at Santa Clara. Saturday they spent with Mrs. Graff's mother, Mrs. Betsey Hardy at Bunker-ville, Bunker-ville, Nevada. Misses Betty and Joy Syphus of Las Vegas and their brother, LaMar who is attending the U. A. C. were here for the holidays with their father, Alfred Syphus. Miss Ora Hirschi who is attending at-tending the B. A. C. at Cedar City is home after the holidays with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. David Hirschi. Mrs. Leeman B. Bennett who was called to the bedside of her mother, Mrs. Alice Christensen at Salt Lake City has returned home. She reports that her mother is not considered critically ill at present. Mrs. Emmareen Graff entertained' entertain-ed' on Wednesday evening eleven club members and one special guest, Mrs. James Judd at cards. Mrs. Marie S. Stansworth received high score. Mr. and Mrs. Geonge A. Haycock Hay-cock of Oregon and their son, Edwin who is attending the TJ. A. C. at Logan are here for the Christmas vacation with Mr. and Mrs. Leo K, Homer. As the Year Passes As the old year yasses attention atten-tion is called to the bulging condition con-dition of the "Hurricane Flat" Christmas stocking. In it are seen a one hundred and ten-thousand dollar high school building completed; three months work on a bridge spanning the Virgin river between Hurricane and La-Verkin La-Verkin which when completed will be the highest bridge in the state; engineers at work on the Berry Springs stretch of road which will connect Hurricane and St. George thus welding the friendship of the eastern to the western ipart of the county and in addition placing Hurricane on the tourist map; a bond- voted', for a new culinary water system;, a North ward chapel and stake building with walls being laid at-present. These good gifts have come with the exception of the church building from the wise distribution distribu-tion of Federal, work projects. Hurricane School Neivs The Christmas programs of the: Hurricane elementary school were given December 2 3 as school closed for the holiday season. Each grade from the first to the sixth inclusive furnished numbers num-bers for the entertainment. The fourth, fifth, and sixth grades met in the elementary school gymnasium and the first, second and third grades (met at the same hour in the North ward chapel. A large number of parens par-ens enjoyed the programs presented pre-sented by their children. The fourth grade ,under the direction of their teacher, Mrs. Prince ,gave an interesting play based upon Charles Dickens' "Christmas Carol", entitled, "Scrooge and the Christmas Fairy". A number of Christmas poems were also given. Mr. Gates fifth igrade also presented pre-sented a group of Christmas poems and a play "Recipe for Christmas Joy". Mr. Iverson' sixth grade presented pre-sented a clever original play entitled en-titled ''The Christmas Fairy", written by Betty Lou Stevens, a member of the class. She also played one of the parts. Others taking part were Wilma Whitney, Charles Conger, and Gam Stan-worth. Stan-worth. In addition to the play a piano solo was given by one of the class. Basketball Hurricane high met Milford here on December 2 3 with Hurricane Hurri-cane taking the game with a score of 37 to 22. This is the seventh game straight that the boys have won. By staging a rally in the last quarter the Beaver second string nosed out Hurricane high by the score of 28-24. The game was played on the local court last Tuesday night. Going into the third quarter, things looked rosy for Hurricane with its 10-17 lead, but Coach Brooks ran in two fresh players, Beaver rallied and placed themselves them-selves four points, ahead; at the finish. Isom was high scorer for Hurricane Hur-ricane with 6 points- He was followed by Hititon with 5, Stout with 4. G. Su'Uvan and Church, 3, Wright aud P. Sullivan 1. |
