Show T r St V 14A Sun Advocate, Price, Utah v v s . ?mrrrT' s Tuesday, August 9, 1994 Keeping healthy, active at 50 Turning age 50 is hardly the sign of old age that it used to be. At age 50, more Americans than ever are at the prime of their lives and careers and more physically fit as well. But feeling just as vigorous as you did 10 years ago doesnt mean your nutrition needs arent changing. To keep the good health that helps you stay active throughout your life, its important to know what these needs are. Health authorities like the American Institute for Cancer Research recommend a low-fdiet for all Americans. But eating less fat has special benefits for people over age 50. Most Carbon County residents know that eating less saturated fat (mainly found in meat and dairy products) lowers blood cholesterol and lowers risk for heart disease, diabetes and certain types of at cancer. All types of fat, including polyunsaturated vegetable oils and margarine, are very high in calories (about 100 calories per tablespoon). Since the amount of calories people burn decreases as they age, and because human beings tend to keep more body fat and lose more muscle over the years, cutting fat to less than 30 percent of daily calories is especially important if youre over 50. At the same time, older adults need more fiber, vitamins and minerals for healthy bones, immunity and proper digestion. The best sources for these nutrients are fruits, vegetables and grains, which supply combinations of nutrients and other substances better than supplements do. Surveys have shown that the diets of many older adults are seriously deficient in vitamins and minerals. meat and Choosing low-flow-fa- t dairy products is another key to good nutrition for older Americans. Some essential minerals, including iron, zinc and calcium, are mainly found in at meat and dairy products. Choosing skim or part-skim milk and cheese as well as small portions of lean meats, fish and skinless poultry can supply the minerals without adding too much fat. The recommended choices are especially beneficial to older adults if they use cooking techniques such as broiling, steaming and baking that dont require adding oil, butter or other fats. Protein, which most Americans get from meat and dairy products, should only total 12 to 15 percent of older adults diets, unless a doctor recommends otherwise. Older people who live alone can share the goal of making mealtimes more nutritious and more fun by taking turns with a friend to plan and host meals or to eat out together once a week or more. While cooking and grocery shopping for just one or two can pose a number of dilemmas, there are tricks that can make things easier. For example, buying large bags of frozen vegetables can make eating more vegetables easier since you can cook just what you need and store the rest. Doubling recipes for casseroles, meats and rice dishes also allows you to freeze extra portions to reheat for quick meals later. The American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR) recommends eating a r balanced low-fa- t, diet which includes plenty of fruits and vegetables every day and drinking alcohol in moderation if at all. Getting to market very quickly is an extremely crucial issue in industry, said Sorensen. With the state funding in place, the RPR Center will underwrite the majority of costs associated with each product in exchange for a small royalty on product sales. The royalty will allow the Center to continue with future support for Utahs manufacturing industries, Sorensen said. Information on the center has been mailed to 1 ,500 Utah companies that might have potential products. Were trying to focus on consumer products with 10 or fewer parts that would sell for $200 or less, noted Sorensen. For more information or to receive an application form, contact David Sorensen at the RPR Center. The BYU department already has significant experience in product development. The BYU Advanced Comp- and Manufacturing Engineering (ACME) Center has been a model for the states centers for excellence program and has resulted in the creation of more than 30 Utah companies. Under the direction of Brent Strong, the ACME Center recently received its fifth year of funding from the Utah Department of Community osites and Economic Development. The state of Utah sets aside about $2.5 million each year to fund 25 centers for excellence, which assist Utah companies move more products into industry, with a potentially positive economic impact on the state, Sorensen said.
