Show HIGHWAY JOLNS UTAH, ARIZONA Hours will be cut off the trip from Salt Lake City to Flagstaff Flag-staff and Phoenix, Arizona, this month by the completion of a 40-mile stretch of highway north from Cameron, Ariz., the Utah state highway commission has been advised. The contractors' are finishing a month ahead of time, according accord-ing to the Arizona state highway high-way department, on one of the largest contracts ever let by that department. Drainage features included 43 bridges of mare than 20-foot span in the 40 mlies. From Salt Lake to. the Arizona Ari-zona state line, south of Kanab, there are already two routes, most of the distance being highly high-ly improved roadway. From th state line to Jacobs lake, in the Kaibab national forest, there is a newly constructed gravel road, and an improved forest road has been constructed part of the distance dis-tance from the lake toward the Grand canyon bridge over the Colorado at Marble canyon, near Lee's Ferry. About 60 miles of roadway remain to be improved between Jacobs lake and the end of the stretch now being completed. The new route, U. S. 89, will be remarkable for the unusual scenery along it, and for the many points of surpassing scenic or scientific interest that may be reached by short side trips. According Ac-cording to highway officials, however, its chief value will be economic, in furnishing a direct automobile route never before available between the populated centers of Utah and Arizona. |
