Show expert gives opinion on cikjndjstry Markets, Highways, Cheap Land, Warm Climate, All Listed Favorable Factors in Poultry Production Prof. Carl Frischknecht, poultry poul-try specialist from the Utah State agricultural college .spent Thursday and Friday of last week in Washington county investigating in-vestigating the possibilities of poultry production here ,and assisting as-sisting the growers with their problems. Tours of groups of interested chicken raisers were made at Hurricane and St. George during dur-ing the two days. Prof. Frischknecht stated that he believed Washington county has certain favorable possibilities, possibili-ties, but there are also drawbacks draw-backs which make a marked success suc-cess very uncertain. However, he stated that there are a number of these latter which can be overcome. ov-ercome. Advantages of Washignton county were listed as a good market, mar-ket, mild climate, cheap land, and so far there are none of the dreaded poultry diseases here. It was pointed out that the Los Angeles market is near Dixie, with excellent highways leading to it, and freight rates on trucks are comparatively low. This is one of the greatest factors fac-tors in favor of the success of the industry in this county, as a ready market there is always as-(Continued as-(Continued on page 3) POULTRY (Continued from page 1) sured for all poultry and poultry products that can be produced. The cost of land per acre is relatively low here, compared to j the more prosperous sections of I the state and California thus assuring as-suring a low overhead cost of running a poultry ranch. There are a number of people here who need work, and the poultry industry in-dustry lends itself very well to intensified farming. At the present time there are none of the dreaded poultry diseases dis-eases in the county, and with reasonable care in the purchase of chicks, spread of disease can be eliminated. The warm sunshine here is an excellent sterilizing agent. Counterbalancing the favorable favor-able possibilities here, there are certain disadvantages to cope with. Feed will always have to be imported here, and the distance it has to be hauled is against big profits. While certain advantages are to be seen in the warm climate, there are also certain diseases and insects which thrive in this temperature.' One of the most dreaded internal parasites known to the poultry grower is the tapeworm, the intermediate host of which is the common house fly. It will require a very strict program of sanitation to do away with this pest. During the tour over the county Prof. Frischknecht posted many birds and found a large infestation of the worm. The death loss in Dixie of baby chicks is approximately 3 3 per cent. The average for the United States is 27 per cent, and for the state of Utah is only 10 per cent. There are many producers pro-ducers in the state who have had losses of five per cent or less. The experience a grower gains each year may reduce the loss, but, ' according to - Prof. Frischknecht, Frisch-knecht, we must quit shipping chicks by parcel post. He said a chick must have food by the time it is 24 hours old if.it is to develop into a first class mar ket bird. Many of the chicks which have been imported here from the state of Missouri have been for as long as five days without food, and the birds that do live will never be more than culls. Chicks can be bought from Missouri hatcheries for 6 cents, but when a loss of from 50 to 75 per cent is taken from the saving, the cost runs high. It is his opinion that the people peo-ple here are not paying enough attention to sanitation. Feed and water are allowed to become contaminated. The birds, he said, may be compared with any very young animal, and that all the poison they take in must be thrown off, which increases the tax on their already weak systems. sys-tems. Three of the most important errors made in the county are listed as: 1 ovr crowding; 2 improper ventilation; 3 insufficient insuffi-cient feed hopper space.
