Isaac is spearheading a fundraiser to help teach Romanian children to read and write. I opportunities for Romanian orphans Raychel Long Hanna Wilcox Jessica Gardner Brooke Christensen Jen Allen STAFF WRITER Spanish Fork High School's student body has an annual fundraiser. This year, the student body officers decided to work on a project where education was the front runner. Kaitlyn Isaac brought Project Romania to the table. After serving there this past summer, Isaac was devastated by the lack of educational opportunities for Romanian children. The money raised by SFHS student body will go directly to help those children learn to read and write, vital skills that will allow them to join the work force and survive. Romania has a long past of corrupt communist rule. Along with eight other girls, Isaac traveled there and saw how orphanages are run. With over 60,000 children in just over 940 orphanages country wide, there is little opportunity for these children to Ieam the basic fundamentals for success. Helping these children learn to read and write will provide them with enough skills to be able to gain working jobs once they are forced out of the orphanages at age 18. Reading and writing will literally mean survival for the many children that will be helped by Project Romania. Throughout this week student body officers have auctioned themselves off to raise funds while having homeroom competitions to see which room could raise the most money. The initial goals for the fundraiser have been met and new ones have been set. In their attempt to raise money SFHS is also reaching out to the community. Citizens and local business can donate money through the end of April by sending checks and money orders to Spanish Fork High School Financial Office at 99 North 300 West Spanish Fork, UT 84660 or they can drop them by in person at the same location. In addition to the contributions to Project Romania, SFHS is taking donations to help pay for the airfare for Isaac to return to Romania and present orphanages with the funds raised. Donations towards Isaac's plane ticket can also be made at the financial office with a special attention to "Plane Ticket Fund" written on the envelope.
