The project included making cupcakes to be delivered to the Juvenile Justice Services in Springville and sewing superhero capes to be given to Mountainland Head Start in Provo. The projects were inspired by NHS character counts week in Feb. The focus of character counts week was service within the community. As part of that,NHS planned a service projects that would benefit within Utah Valley. NHS advisor, Ann Dart said, "I love to see my NHS kids get excited about service. They are very giving. It's obvious that they really care about the recipients of their service." They spent the first part of the evening baking and decorating cupcakes. The foods room at Spanish Fork High School provided all of the equipment necessary. After the cupcakes were finished they used the sewing room to make superhero capes. The students made capes with a princess theme for girls and Batman capes for boys. Trenton Argyle, an NHS Officer, said, "We're helping kids become their own superheroes." The project started at five in the evening and some of the members didn't get home until nine. NHS president, Whitney Dixon said, "We have a lot of really dedicated and super talented people that make these projects possible.'' Several NHS members also signed up to help deliver the cupcakes on Friday. "Nothing beats the feeling of knowing that you're going to brighten some little child's day," said Dixon. NHS performs many service projects throughout the school year. Before school gets out they also plan to visit the state hospital and have a closing banquet. AmberCole is an intern in the Lakeview Department at the Wasatch Mental Health Hospital. She has been there since Jan. and says she loves it. The patients are a lot of fun to be around, she says. And even though they have mental illnesses, they're the funniest people I've ever met. She goes with them to the different group classes, observes them, and just gets to know them. They don't want the interns doing too much, for fear of something happening. The state of the patients isn't too stable, and they just don't know how they will react to them. When asked if she would recommend this internship for future students, immediately she answered with a yes. You get a better Amber Cole understanding of those kinds of illnesses. Even though she doesn't plan on going into psychology, she still enjoys working with people. Amber Cole is just one of the many incredible interns at Spanish Fork High School. i |
