John Jackson STAFF WRITER A team that is 8-1, and is the second ranked 5A team in the state, shouldn't be getting blown out anywhere they play. So what was the problem at Viewmont, where the Dons were 10-run-ruled off the field in a 14-2 beat down? Was it the week layoff they had? Was it the weather? Was it playing on Viewmont's home field? According to Coach Shoe it was simple, the Dons were not ready to play. Shoe said, "We didn't come to play, compete, or meet the challenge. Viewmont came to play; we didn't." A disappointed Coach Shoe placed the blame on himself, "I was very disappointed in our effort. It is my job to have the team ready to play, and I didn't. I blame myself most of all." It looked good in the beginning as the first two hitters scored the only two runs of the game for the Dons. Shaun Peterson got on base by an error. Damon Ward followed up with a single. Tyler Hanks scored Peterson when he hit a single. Ward was able to score on a Kade Christensen single. It was down hill from there as the Viewmont lineup chased pitchers Devin Nelson,Selby Brummett, = * • « *^^-T5 TV-., 1 --*.' Andrew Wilson / Spanish Fork News BACK TO BASE: The Dons are looking to get back to basics after taking a 14-2 shellacking at the hands of Viewmont. Tyler Duffin and Tyler Hanks. The pitchers combined to allow 12 hits and 14 runs, and uncharacteristic stat of a good pitching staff. Damon Ward, Tyler Hanks, Kade Christensen, Pinky Lunceford, and Kirt Daley we're the only Dons to get a hit in this game. The Dons have two more games against Taylorsville and Payson before the ail important region play begins. Lady Dons vs. Lone Peak: From SOFTBALL • B l • N E W S Spanish Fork L Lady Dons seemed willing to help. The first five Lone Peak batters in the bottom of the sixth reached base, despite picking up only one hit. Starting pitcher Cami Robinson gave way to Deven Baum after walking Baseball Player Profile two and giving up a single to left. Baum lasted only twothirds of an inning, walking one and giving up a double before being replaced by sophomore Dezlee Roberts. The Don defense did not help their pitchers, committing two errors in the inning. After six complete innings the Dons led 18-9. Spanish Fork was held scoreless in the top of the seventh, only one of two innings in which the Lady Dons did not push a run across the plate. In the bottom of the seventh the Knights drew a little closer on a two run home run before Roberts induced a ground ball to shortstop to end the game. \ Coach Andrews was pleased with the offense, scoring 18 runs. He was concerned about the Lady Don defense and pitching, noting they needed to improve, fcitt added the cold temperatures probably played a factor. The win moves the Dons record to 11 -0 on the season.
