Ty Cunningham, speedy Pioneer also travels halfback, from Highland each day to attend school in Lehi. Highland's loss is the Pioneers' gain. Both athletes have contributed greatly to the football team this year. d Cunningham is a receiver as well as a deceptive halfback. And Rios can be counted on to get those important points after touchdowns. Last week he came in the backfield and caught a touchdown pass from Price. Al Peters scored the first touchdown by hitting paydirt on a four yard run. The point after by Rios was good. The first quarter ended 0 for Lehi. In the second half Cook stopped the Wasps great halfback Mair with a nice open field tackle. If not for Cook's defensive effort Mair would probably have gone all the way. He , scored a few minutees later however, on a sweep around the right end. The PAT was blocked by Lehi's Price. It was Ty Cunningham's time to shine in the next series. He peeled his way to the 42 after taking A Wasp kickoff and then grabbed a pass for another gainer. Lehi gave the ball up to Wasatch to end Lehi's threat, but on the Pioneer's next offensive effort, Cunningham made a nice catch and motated to the four yard line before being forced out of bounds. Price carried the ball in on a keeper and Rios again got the PAT. The score was now 14-- 6 with just seconds to go in the first half. Cook picked off a Wasp pass to end their scoring effort just before the half ended. Lorin Young tripped up Mair on his kickoff return to the 19, and thwarted the Wasps attempt to add to their score as the third period started. The Pioneers netted a 4 win after an afternoon of great football. To make the victory even sweeter, the game was played on a gorgeous sunny afternoon in front of a stadium full of excited homecoming and winning fans, and the points weren't scored until the last seconds of the game. The Pioneers in past years, have been denied a lot of offensive thrust, but that trend was reversed in Friday's game. Lehi notched up 230 total offensive yards: 115 passing and 115 rushing. The defense limited the Wasps to 84 yards rushing and 20 yards passing with three interceptions. Lehi's nemesis this year has been The Pioneers were penalties. penalized 10 times and lost 120 yards via penalties. The Lehi crew lost one touchdown and probably another when Kyle Smith intercepted a Wasp pass and raced the length of the field and into the end zone. His great effort was in vain because a clipping penalty downfield nullified the score. Pioneer quarterback Scott Price tossed a pass to Mike Wilson who cradled the ball and scooted 87 yards before he was brought down. That gain was nullified by another clipping penalty. Tack the lost penalty yardage on the total Pioneer offensive effort and you'd have a 350 yard day's work from Lehi's offensive unit. Considering those lost yards, Lehi was lucky to pull out the victory. Another pleasant surprise for the Pioneers is Mario Rios' kicking game. His kicking adds a new dimension to the Pioneers powerful team. Mario is another student from Highland who opted to attend Lehi High School. Wasatch threatened throughout' the third quarter but Lehi was vindicated by Smith's great interception and return to their 14 yard line, only to have Kyle's great effort nullified by a clipping penalty. Right after Smith's heroics, Wilson picked off a pass and sped back to the 11 yard line, only to have g that effort called back by yet another penalty (an illegal block). Lehi's penalties in the third quarter became a pain for the fans as one after another of the Pioneers' ., gains were lost. Lehi tried a spine-tinglin- mmmmmm. o Lehi's defense pretty well contained the Wasps to the middle of the field during their next offensive series. Wasatch finally scored on a touchdown pass from Cook to Brown and then made a conversion good and the score was knotted at Thayn, Gray and Wilson blocked a punt on the Wasp's 25. Price carried for runs of 11, 3 and 3, then Peters carried for 4 and Price took the line for pigskin in from the four-yar- d the Pioneer's score. Rios carried the ball in for two points after a fake PAT attempt. The Wasps' Mair took the ensuing tackled by Lehi's Hansen. A Wasp pass fell incomplete and another Wasp penalty hurt Wasatch's chances to catch up. Lehi's Mike Wilson intercepted the ball and traveled to the 19. Playing it safe, Price kept the ball and the game score for Lehi. ended with a The Wasps' great halfback, Curtis Mair, a 165 pound junior, gave the Pioneer defense fits all afternoon, but Lehi's defense did a great job of keeping him contained. Price did a great job at quarterback and on defense; there were so many standouts on defense it's difficult to single players out for the two-poi- Shane Berry. Bruce Cook also gave the Wasps trouble all afternoon. On offense, you have to credit Al Peters and Cunningham, along with Price and a great effort by the entire offensive line. They are doing a super job of protecting their quarterback and giving him time to find his receivers. Coach Lou Andrus was jubilant after the game, and gave full credit to his players. "We made too many mistakes, but overall I'm very proud of the team," he said. 22-1- 4 14-1- o honors.
