Show INCREASE COPPER PRODUCTION. I For two successive months copper production has diminished and deliveries have exceeded out- -put. The curtailment policy seems to be in full force and effect and the stock of unsold metal is growing beautifully less. But the same wires that brought the copper producers' statement for July bore the intelligence that the first lot of copper to be exported from the Alaskan mines of the Guggenheims was being loaded at Seattle for Europe. Locally it was asserted that tjie "Utah Copper company is preparing to increase by two million pounds its production for the next quarter quar-ter of the year. The Alaskan shipment was no childish prank; it consisted of 1,000 tons, two million mil-lion pounds, worth about $250,000. That is precisely pre-cisely the amount the Utah Copper is expected to raise its ante in July, August and September. If the Guggenheims and Utah Copper continue ' to hand out extra copper in thousand-ton lots someone, it is plain, will have to withhold thousand-ton lots in order to keep the output within its present bounds. One really cannot expect the Utah Copper to do it, especially as.it has just found out that the changes in its mills enable it to save more than 70 per cent of the values beside doubling the tonnage capacity. |
