Show H JOHN BRANSFORD CALLS THE BUZZARD. M The filing of the suit of Mayor John S. Brans- M ford against the Herald-Republican for $50,000 H damages for "false, malicious and defamatory B libel," was to,have been expected. The editorials H regarding Mayor Bransford which have appeared H in the Smoot sheet during the past ten days have H Loen of such a nature that no self-respecting man H could overlook them, and those who waded Hl tlirough the filth and slander contained therein aro very certain that the Mayor is more than f justified in his action. The Herald-Republican won the last city campaign cam-paign for the American party by its vile attacks on Mr. Bransford, and its present policy is one of the very best assets the American party has for carrying the coming election under the new commission com-mission form of government. This journal withholds with-holds its opinion regarding the outcome of the suit pending the tiial, but it is free to state that the sympathies of every decent man and woman in the community are with the MJayor, whose clean record during his terms of office cannot be challenged chal-lenged by anyone. The bluff of the Herald-Republican has been called to the Queen's taste, and if the paper has anything on the Mayor, as it has intimated during all its slanderous warfare, it has an excellent chance to make a complete expose in open court, and pending that time all of its vilification will have exactly the same weight as that in which it has Indulged the past fortnight. It is too bad that the ex-convict traducer who used to guide the destinies of the Smoot sheet is not wielding the editorial pen at present. How he would revel in the slime that his former employers em-ployers are hurling and how perfectly blended uould be his additions to the smell! And then with his accomplishments and wider experience among the unspeakables, he could make more attractive libels. |
