Show THE HORN SILVER CAVE A Serious Disaster at the Famous Mine All sorts of rumors concerning a disaster dis-aster at the Horn Silver mine were afloat upon the streets yesterday some alleging at the whole mine had gone in others that many lives had been lost but no two agreeing as to the precise pre-cise details A HERALD reporter called it the office of the company where he was shown the following letter from Major Hiil who is at Frisco FRIsco Utah February 12 1885 k ilr Walker The long djeaded and expected cave in tho mine came last night fortunately hurting no one What damage it has done 1 cannot yet tell I refuse to allow any one upon the levels where anv loose ground is The surface ground has been working all along The snow and rain storms have helped it and last night at midnight mid-night the surface settled and the jar or concussion caused a cave on the sixth level and so shook up things that the shaft has pinched the cages fast I find the seventh level all right this morning and the damage may not be very great but I can tell nothing atall about it When things settle we will examineand see what we can do but we have had so much trouble from the broken and caving surfaces and it is so difficult and expensive to do anything in our soft hanging walls that I may decide abandon this shaft and discontinue I discon-tinue hoisting ore until we can get up bins and arrange to take it put of shaft No3 I have spent too much money trying to hold up this shaft already The engine and gallows frame have not suffered at all The boilers have settled nqt enough however to break the steam pipes No damage whatever about the new shaft or new machinery Yours etc H C HIIL i1nnnfAr Mr Walker said he expected more complete details this morning Theywere not quite ready he said to work through the new sjmft but expected ex-pected to be soon Those who are acquainted with previous pre-vious events of a similar nature will be aware that this is a serious disaster to the Horn Silver It it fs only as bad as the manager reuorts the expense of getting to rights again will be something some-thing enormous A number of miners who were in the mine at the time and who narrowly escaped with their lives were relating the particulars of the affair with very sober faces in town yesterday The stock in New York did not appear to be affected by the news as the quotation yesterday 255 wns but a 10ceut drop from Thursdays figure |
