Show THREE MONTHS OLD Yesterday a scrap of newspaper wasp was-p ded up and idle curiosity directed thee the-e es to the dirty print Only part of the matter could be made out but thai little was mighty interesting reading It seems to have been a press dispatch from New York the date November 3 being visible This is some of what can be read Jones chairman of the national committee com-mittee said I thinknow what I have always thought that we will carry the northern States without an exception We will win in Indiana and I have not a shadow of doubt as to the result in New Jersey and Connecticut Blaine is as good as elected The chairman of the New York State committee told me that his latest estimate of Blames plurality in this Stateformed upon a careful analysis of reports received re-ceived from every countywas that our candidate would have at least 30000 plurality here In Indiana the prospect is equally good Mr New telegraphed tele-graphed from Indianapolis late Saturday Satur-day night that the State would give a clean Republican plurality of at least 10000 and I dont hesitate to accept the estimate as being a pretty good one The party in Indiana was never in bet ter condition and a more thorough efficient canvass was never seen than has been conducted there by the State committee In New Jersey the Repub lican plurality will not fall below GOfO Connecticut we will carry by a plurality of between 2000 and 3000 votes I am satisfied every way that the canvass could not have terminated so far as present indications po more fivornhlv to Blame To his own individual fell aeavors as much as to the efforts of the gentlemen who have been working for iimhe will owehis election He has made a canvass unprecedented in the history of this country for zeal and determina tion and the demonstrations of enthusiasm enthu-siasm which have greeted him wherever lIe has gone attest the popularity in which he is held There is absolutely no doubt whatever of Mr Blames elec ion ionThen Then follows what we assume to be similarly confident expressions by other members of the Republican committee but these cannot be made out in full Some one declares that Blaine will certainly have 218 electoral votes and there is a reasonably fair chance for 12 more in Virginia Since this was originally printed only three short months have flown and yet how strangely all reads Run your eye over Jones words on the eve of the election and then reflect what fools these mortals beand how little the wise ones among the politicians know Two days ago the electoral votes were counted count-ed in Congress and in the Elaine column were not found the northern States without an exception Indiana did not give a clear Republican plurality of at least 10000 as New said it would i but a Democratic majority of 6512 showing that Mr New was out in his careful estimate over 16000 votes Jones had not shadow of doubt as to the result in New Jersey and Connecticut Connec-ticut in the former of which Elaines plurality would not fall below 6000 and the plurality in the Nutmeg State would be between 2000 and 3000 but New Jersey gave Cleveland over 4000 plurality and Connecticut nearly 1200 The at least 30000 plurality in New York turned out to be 1200 plurality for Cleveland and so there was absolutely abso-lutely a good deal of doubt as to Mr Blames election There is not much in the scrap oopied Ilbovebut lute history is full ot interest in-terest |
