| Show OFFICERS OR ABDUCTORS A Popular Lodging House Made to Serve the Purpose of a Jail Something of a breeze was created on the street last evening by the rumor that two strangers had been keeping an old man locked up in a room in the Hill Building for several days past and that Judge Zane had granted a writ of habeas corpus compelling the men to show their authority for the act A HERALD reporter learned that Mr S H Lewis had procured such a writ directed to two men named Baldwin and Meigs but later developments made it probable that the case would be arranged out of court Some days ago a Mr Sargent who has been in this city for several months past and boarding board-ing at the Spencer House was arrested ar-rested by a Mr Meigs who was said to be a Colorado officer who made the arrest on a warrant charging Sar gent with having decamped with the tunds of some county in Colorado Meigs Baldwin and their prisoner whom they had really had locked up in a room for several days though why they delayed so long in leaving with him is not known came to the marshals mar-shals office last evening where they met Governor Murray and Secretary Thomas Meigs and Baldwin promptly produced a requisition from the Governor Gover-nor of Colorado authorizing them to act but there was still sufficient of a shadow uncertainty about the whole affair to induce the marshal to take custody cus-tody of Mr Sargent while Governor Murray telegraphed to the Governor of Colorado to learn something further of the matter |
