Kunich 3S8th FVV Public Affairs enever I ear a son by the rock band "Journey," I can't XJ help but think of Kathy, a girl I knew back home before joining the Air Force. She had all of their albums and they were by far her favorite group. Thinking back, it seems like yesterday, but it was actually the summer of '85. We were a bunch of neighborhood teenagers, and for that one year, the six of us wrere best friends. It was also that year we found out Kathy had leukemia, a form of cancer. At any age I guess death can be mysterious, but when you're only 15 or 16, it's a lot different. Some of us tried to be optimistic and not think about how deadly the disease could be. Others just pretended the disease wasn't fatal, but that became increasingly harder as the days and months dragged on and Kathy 's long, brown hair began to fall out. She lost a lot of weight too. Soon, she was spending most of her time in a small hospital room. My friend Eric and I decided we couldn't just sit around and let her get worse. We heard there was an organization in Pittsburgh that helped grant wishes for terminally ill children. As the years have passed, the hurt has subsided, but every so often, I'll read a story about a small child with cancer and have to choke back a tear.
