Show POSTAL SAVINGS BANK BILL READ IN SENATE Washington, Jan. C. Tho bill to es-' es-' tablish postal savings bonks wa9 taken up by the senate today and -read for amendments. Senator Carter announcing announc-ing that he mH not attempt to get a vote on the bill until next week. That state banks should bo used as government depositories for postal funds was proposed In amendments offered by Senator Smith of Michigan, Senator Cummins of Iowa, and Senator Sena-tor Gore of Oklahoma. Senators McCumber, Fulton and otfiers declared In favor of placing such state banks. on an exact equality with national banks as government depositories. Mr. Smith's amendment proposed the acceptance of state, county, municipal or United States bonds as security. Senator Piles offered an amendment amend-ment providing that postal savings funds bo deposited ratable among banks of a city only on a basis of their capital stock and Burplus. Amendments offered by Senator Carter for the committee on postoffl-ces postoffl-ces and post , roads, reduced tho amounts that may be received from any one dopositor from $1,000 to $300 the amount that may be taken from a single depositor In any one month from $200 to $100, and increased the minimum mini-mum of a single deposit from 10 to 50 cents. The amendments will be voted on later. |
