Show DISASTROUS Fertilizing Plant Destroyed; Tenants of Thirty Houses Driven Into Street. Chicago, Ills., Jan. 8. Fire at tho ptock yards tonight destroyed a largo part of the fertilizing plant of Darling Darl-ing & Co. and burned large stores ot chemicals, causing explosions and Injuring In-juring a number of firemen. The loss was $500,000. For more than four hours every available fireman In the city fought In the below zero weather to prevent a spread of the flames. The tenants of thirty houses In tho neighborhood were driven Into the streets and many of the 210 employes narrowly escaped. The fire Is supposed sup-posed to have started among dust in the drying room and to havo spread to the large tanks. Ab these exploded the employes escaped. A fertilizing plant of Swift & Co., just across the street, appeared to be doomed and the energies of tho fire department were directed toward saving sav-ing this and other buildings. An hour later, a wall of one of the buildings fell In, injuring several firemen. The water froze soon after being thrown ou the building. |
