Show JOHN W. GATES FOR FREE COAL, IRON AND LUMBER Washington, Jan. C. John W. Gates has joined the ranks of those who are speaking for free trado on iron, coal and lumber. In a letter to Speaker Speak-er Cannon, which was referred to tho committee on ways and means, Mr. Gates declares that theso articles should be on the free list and that a cut of 50 per cent in the stool schedule sche-dule would not affect the manufacturers manufactur-ers of iron and steel In this country. Mr. Gates' letter is dated at Port Arthur, Texas, and reads as follows: "I notice a great deal of eldence Is being taken on tariff matters in Washington. It teems to me that there are three articles that ought to be put on the free list iron, coal and lumber. I have a large portion of my fortune in the steel business, but I say this to you, conscientiously and candidly. A cut of 50 per cent in tho schedule would not hurt the manufacturers manu-facturers of iron and steel a particle." |
