Sanders has more bosses in the 388th Fighter Wing than any other chief. He's the new command chief master sergeant for the wing. "I look at it (the job) as if I work for 2,000 enlisted people," the chief said. "My first priority is taking care of people, that means to help them get what they need to accomplish the mission, and be their advocate, fairly representing their concerns to senior leadership." ' The chief is well equipped to take over for Chief Master Sgt. Charles Clymer, who transferred last week to Misawa AB, Japan. Chief Sanders has 23 years in the Air Force; half of that in pararescue and the other half in manpower. "As the chief of manpower for the past fifteen months, it was my business to know everyone's job in the wing," he said. "That certainly does not make me an expert but it made it necessary for me to know about every (Air Force career field) we have, including the details of our deployment taskings." "That gave me a rare opportunity to observe and understand some of the challenges the wing faces every day, from just about every functional perspective." "And I took good notes on those issues, particularly the ones that directly affect our folks." That knowledge enables him to come to the job already familiar with many of the issues the 388th enlisted force faces. "I believe that it's critical in this job (as CCM) to fully understand what they do so I can effectively communicate their concerns to the commanders." Chief Sanders has worked at all levels of command within the Air Force from a "I look at it (the job) as if I work for 2000 enlisted people. " . nd er May 18. By Tech. Sgt. "I've had many opportunities to gain a pretty good understanding of how the Air Force does business," he said. Chief Sanders is yery familiar with the duties of the position; he filled in for Chief Clymer 100 days last year when Chief Clymer was away from Hill AFB and spent four or five months as acting CCM at Lajes AB, the Azores, during a previous assignment. Chief Sanders was selected for the job by Colonel John Weida, the 388th Fighter Wing commander. "I wanted Chief Sanders for this position because of his impeccable record of professionalism I have personally observed ever day," Colonel Weida said. "As the acting CCM during Chief Clymer's TDYs, he gave me candid and very valuable advice." The colonel explained that Chief Sanders also has one of the requirements for success as a CCM: the ability to relate well with his peers and other enlisted personnel. "The primary purpose of this position is to take care of people, so they can take care of the mission." said Chief Sanders. "You have to be sincere and honest with folks. I believe that's an essential requirement for this job." Colonel Weida and Chief Sanders share priorities.
