Show Jun 7. 2001 Edwards team develops new deployment space saver The idea for a loading system began with Master Sgt. Robert Wertz, a loadmaster with the AEF Battlelab at Mountain Home AFB. Globemas-te- r Wertz observed that, although a III aircraft has 41,000 cubic feet of cargo space, cargo is typically less than 48 inches tall and occupies only 8,000 cubic feet. This can leave up to 33,000 cubic feet of unused space above the floor. This same observation of ineffective space use appeared to apply to all cargo aircraft. Wertz envisioned a system that would allow cargo to be stacked bunk-bestyle to effectively use the "wasted" cargo space. At this point the AEF Battlelab called on the 412th TW for developmental assistance. The wing's logistics professionals with expertise in airlift, fabrication, engineering and airdrop brainstormed two possible designs. bi-lev- el by Mike Mann 4 12th Test Wing Engineering Directorate EDWARDS AFB, Calif. (AFPN) Using a unique research and development concept, C-1- 7 a Mountain Home AFB, Idaho, noncommissioned officer and the 4 12th Test Wing here are hoping to save the Air Force millions of dollars each year and help the service deploy combat fighter wings more effi- ciently. A team from the 412th TW designed, built and is now testing two versions of a new cargo loading system that has the potential to reduce the number of airlift aircraft required to deploy an aerospace expeditionary force fighter wing. If adapted, the system will free up more cargo aircraft to support other missions, which in turn will lower deployment costs. bi-lev- el d The 412th Logistics Group collected all the ideas and translated them into comprehensive designs and fabrication drawings. They built the various components, which were assembled into two working models. Airdrop specialists in the wing evaluated each model for ease of assembly and disassembly. They loaded and secured cargo with tie-dochains and straps. Each assembly was also suspended upside down while the team performed negative-gravit- y crash load tests. Workers also conducted lateral crash load tests. The test team reported both models exceeded all customer design and crash load requirements.
