The funding for the grants is through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Child Care Development Fund. Funding for each grantee will cov er three years. The process for creating the grants was a collaborative one. Information was gathered from the state census, Department of Workforce Services Employment Centers, the Utah Department of Health, Utah Children and regional Child Care Resource and Referral agencies. As a result of that process, the Office of Child Care and public sector volunteers determined how many children in Utah be-teen the ages of one month to 12 years needed care. A child was deemed to need care if both, w those needing weekend and evening care. Our goal is to provide 25 child care slots per 100 children who need care, said Lynette Rasmussen, Director of the Office of Child Care. We calculated the need for infants, for and for school-ag- e children by count. Our intentions are to help start new child care businesses that meet the needs of local communities. The Office of Child Care will monitor the grantees to determine how much new or expanded time child care space was created and maintained over a three-yeperiod. A second round of Start-Uand Expansion Grant applications will be made available in February 2003 for award in July 2004.
