Show Did You Know... FlrMr ARIZONA In 1974, two young cave explorers in the Whetstone Mountains felt air coming out of a ground crack and ctawlcd inside. They found a pristine cavern foil of extraordinary colors and rock formations, which they explored for four years before telling anyone of their discovery. The state later bought the site, and the resulting Kartchner Caverns State Park is now open to visitors seven days a week. CALIFOR N IA The Desert Tortoise Research Natural Area near California City (pop. 8,383), in the Mojave Desert, is set aside for the official state reptile. It is also home to coyotes, badgers, jackrabbits, and the threatened Mojave ground squirrel. IDAHO Elmer Cook, a cattle rancher in Hagerman (pop. 600), discovered a rich trove of fossil bones in 1928, which turned out to be horses that the remains of a herd of zebra-lik- e drowned while crossing a river there 3.3 million years ago. It is now the site of Hagerman Fossil Beds National Monument. N EVADA is Valley The state's oldest and latgest state of Fire, just west of Lake Mead. park Dedicated in 1935, it includes pettoglyphs showing the use of the atlatl, a notched stick used to throw spears and a predecessor of the bow and arrow. Petrified logs that waslied into 3,000-year-o- ld the area 223 million years ago and the Seven Sisters ted nxk formations are other park attractions. OREGON The Newberry Volcano near Bend (pop. 20,469) was built up by thousands of eruptions over the last 600,000 years. The most recent occurred about 1 ,300 yean ago and left behind a large lava flow of obsidian, a dark natural glass formed when molten lava cools. The Newberry crater also contains two alpine lakes, brown and rainwhich are home to trophy-siz- e bow trout and Atlantic salmon. UTAH The states emblem a beehive signified the importance of industry and the pioneer virtues of thrift and perseverance when it was chosen to symbolize the provisional state in 1848. It remained on the seal when Utah became -- a stare in 1896. WASHINGTON Sherman Pass National Forest Scenic Byway in the northeast part of the state offers spectacular views, pristine wilderness, and the remains of a 1920s logging camp. The byway is named for Civil War Gen.
