Show BUILDING A BRIGHT FUTURE The Uintah Basin Standard of the title of Academic Volleyball. She would like to pursue her college education down south at the Georgia Southern University. There, she will study ophthalmology, and someday perform eye surgery. Garrett Dastrup, son of Kent and Jeanne Dastrup, will'compete in the area of Social Science. Garrett is the president of both the school History Club and the Altamont Drug-Frand Safety Program, UFYI. He is also the 1st Counselor on the Altamont Seminary Council. Another great accomplishment is the attendance of the Governor's Honors Academy. Garrett also excels in athletics, end he was captain of both the Altamont football and basketball teams. He was in both awarded Academic sports. Garrett is the Altamont Valedictorian of the 2000-0- 1 graduating class. After graduation, Garrett plans on . serving an LDS mission and then extending his knowledge by going to college. He has considered many occupations from the field of computer technology to working for the All-Sta- te ee All-STA- CIA. Elementary. Although many of Joey's strengths lie in the academics, he excels in athletics as well. Joey is captain of the football and basketball teams. He received Honorable Mention atfootbell and was a All-Stat- e, member of the 1st team in basketball He was also elected a at Delegate Boys State. Altamont goes for five out of 10 in Academic All-State- By Therena Morrill A is for AltamonL..Academic....and Acedemic basketball, that is. And Altamont High claims the title for being the high school with the most players on this honorary All-stat- All-sta- e. te A team. Each year the Utah High School Activities Association selects ten players to be named members of the Academic high school basketball team. The players are selected on the basis of highest grade point averages. Of the ten players who were selected for tiie 2001 team, five were from Altamont High. This is en incredible accomplishment on the part of these five young men, and a great honor for Altamont High, said boys' basketball coach Mick Field sted. It has never happened before in the state of Utah and it wilj probably never happen again. The five students named to the team were: Devin Academic Tew, Garrett Dastrup, Jake Oman, Joe E. Meeks, and Darrin Burton. All five A All-Sta- Ail-Sta- te te Mountain Dairy Compost of these young men had a GPA of 3.93 or above. The Altamont High boys' basketball team finished their 2000 - 2001 season with 19 wins and 8 losses, the school's best record ever. The boys' basketball team also had a great showing in St. George at the state championships this year. They placed fourth overall in the category, losing their final game at the buzzer to Aanguitch, the school that went on to win in tiie finals. But the ultimate climax for the season were the phenomenal honors given to their five players who received a position on the Academic team. The boys at Altamont High aren't the only ones who ere excelling 0 academically. During the school year, there were five senior girls who played on the girls' basketball team. All five of these girls were named Sterling Scholars for Altamont These student athletes are proving that academic pursuits are still a priority for them despite their busy sports schedules.
