FUTURE FCCLA 6 Academic Decathlon Reading, service and a lot of study are hallmark at Duchesne High School By Therena Morrill Great things are happening this year at Duchesne Highl Through various clubs and programs, students are excelling in academics and leadership skills. Students are learning that reading is enjoyable, and reading and vocabulary skills are improving. Last fall, after only a few Weeks, reading test scores rose in every grade except one. Duchesne High Principal Stan Young expects that next fell, after students have been participating in this reading program for a full year, reading test scores will dramatically ..... improve.. The Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America Club, the only student club that centers on the family and community service, is alive and well et Duchesne High. The club claims 45 members and is fortunate to have Ellen Hill, 2000 National Advisor of the Year, as its advisor. Under the tuteiageof Mrs. Hill, students prepare to become future leaders of the community. Throughout the year, these club members plan and participate in d various activities. have They implemented Grandparents Day and Kids' Safety Day at Duchesne Elementary. A Chapter Showcase Scrapbook has been compiled, and various illustrated talks on such important subjects as eating disorders, health and exercise, and literacy have been prepared and and put in an additional eight hour study day. ' Team coach and advisor, John Foster, to excited to report that all of the team's hard work has paid its reward: the team walked away from the state competition in St George with a total of 24 medals. Every Duchesne team member won at least one medal in the small schools' category I They answered questions on a wide varirty of topics including math, science, economics, language and literature, music, art, speech, and psychology. . 7 April 23. 2001 The Academic Decathlon team consists of nine members comprising three categories. Three of those members must have a grade point average of 4.0 to 3.75; they make up the Honors Team. The Scholastic Team is made up of three students with GRA's of 3.74 to 3.0 and the final category to the Varsity Team, made up cf three students with GPA.'sof less than 3.0. The Varsity Team members are usually students whose grades don't really indicate how intelligent they really are. According to Coach Foster, these are the kids who perhaps have been less motivated in the past to make good grades. A huge benefit of being an Academic Decathlon team member is that it to tremendously motivating to participate, end students learn incred-- ' ible study skills that will aid them throughout their lives. Coach Foster says that Duchesne has a young team that is exceptionally motivated and he anticipates that next year's competition will be another great experience for Duchesne Highl Farmers Insurance 161 E 100 - 7 722-247- Fort Myton - Mvton 722-215- 0 Freedom Realty - 73S3000 186 W Main.
