April 17. 2001- - Page pr Duchesne High TLC students showcase jobs at career fair Duchesne High students Lesley Jenkins and Maria Farnsworth planned and carried out a Mini Career Fair for the Duchesne Junior High Technology Life and Career (TLC) classes on March 28. This career fair was also partof the Duchesne County School District Work Based Learning Pro gram. In order to determine what careers would be highlighted a survey was done of the jun- ior high age students to determine which careers they were interested in. The career fair startedoff with the Department Of Workforce Services version of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire with questions on careers, education and salary. This presentation was done by Slionie Barker and Jenine Wood with the Departmentof Workforce Services. Lesley and Maria did an outstand- organizingthe MiniCareer Fair. They had presentations from an electrician, Ron Remington, who is employed at the Uintah Basin Medical Center. Kelly Crosier also from the Uintah Basin Medical Centdt gave an overview of medical and radiology careers. Lee Woods from Duchesne County did a presentation on reception arid o (Tice duties. Sherry Madsen from Gateway 66 did a presentation on owning and operating your own business. Karri Hoopes from the Uintah Basin Medical Center gave a presentation on nursingand medical careers. Jtod Harrison from Corner Repair did a presentation on auto mechanic and repair work. Brad Peterson from Calumet trucking gave a presenta- - t; ' s. i w w. ' .v,; if P tion on truck driving. Rick Coil and Mark Nielsen gave a presentation on lawenforcement Trina Thomas gave a presentation on cosmetology. Approximately 100 students participated, they were allowed to at1 tend 3 presentations each. During the wrap up session Karri Hoopes asked if the Mini Career Fair was valuable and if it made the students think shout what career and education choices that they might make. The Chapter adviser is Ellen Hill, they were also advised by Jane Gurr with tlie Department ofWorkforce Services. The Mini Career Fair was such a success that the girls are planning a 2 Annual Duchesne Junior High School Mini Career Fair for next year. WE went to several workshops the first day. At the workshop they taught us communication skills and how to get involved. Amanda Johnson commented, They had some really fun activities in the workshops. One of them, we had to make up a name and put it on our backs, then try not to let anyone see it while you tried to get other nennlas names. It was wav fon. Fleming, Uintah Highs2000 class president, won the 28 annual Delta Epsilon Chi sales promotion contest in February, opening the door for him to compete at nationals, May 6 in Anaheim, Calif., where about 3,000 other participants from across the country will vie for top honors in 21 events. Fleming; who served as his high schools vice president of public relations in DECA and now serves as the some position atSLCC, understands the benefits of Delta Epsilon Chi, a national organization dedicated to students pursuingcareers in marketing and business management. SLCC plans to be a wireless computer college in two yean, according to Daniel Bingham, SLCC Miller Campus executive dean.
