Show 5B THE GREEN SHEET Thursday, May 22, 1986 Bacchus To Hold Carnival KEARNS. PTA officers at Bacchus elementary will host a spring carnival on May 29. A fun run beginning at 5:30 p.m. will kick off the activities. The run e will be a race, with a fun run dash set up for children. All participants will receive ribbons. Carnival activities beginning at 6 p.m. will include games and rides for all ages. Food items available will include sloppy joes, hot dogs, nachos, snow cones, cotton candy, scones and soft drinks. Tickets may be purchased before school, from 8:30 to 9 a.m., at five for $1. Chorus Lions will present the at musical play Tom Sawyer Vista elementary, with performances at 2 p.m. Tuesday, 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. Wednesday. The play is a career ladder program under the direction of teachers Janet Thorpe and Cathy Stringham. Students have been rehearsing since November, four mornings a week for 45 minutes, prior to school opening, said Miss Thorpe. Principal Max Lawrence built the sets for the production, which is open to the public with no admission charge. shorts came at just the right time. The administration, teachers and parents of CHS have decided to allow Bermuda and walking length shorts in the Cyprus dress code once again. This allowance was made last s year, but short shorts and worn by a few students resulted in the end of wearing shorts to school. So far it seems students are excited about the new rule and want to keep the new dress code that is allowed. The administration has warned, however, that as soon as students neglect the code set for shorts, all shorts will be prohibited. Last night (Wednesday) students and patrons of the Cyprus community enjoyed the talents exhibited by the students in the spring arts festival. These students performed in dance, music and in song and really did a super job. Congratulations to the guys who will be participating in Boys State this summer. POLICE The Operation Graduation assembly promises to be one of the most exciting assemblies of the school year. Three men from McKay Dee hospital who were paralyzed as a result of driving under the influence will be discussing the consequences of taking risks. They will relate their shocking personal experiences with substance abuse. This assembly has been presented at other schools in the area and has been well received. P.M. Magazine has also done a follow-ureport on the assembly and considers it an excellent presentation. The assembly will be presented tomorrow (Friday) at 9:05 a.m. Parents and students are encouraged to attend. The girls track team took first place at the Region Three track meet Thursday. The boys track team took second place in this event. Keith Stone took three first place medals and scored 32 points. The state track meet is scheduled for tomorrow and Saturday at Weber State. Students interested in a career dealing with children age are being invited to enroll in an occupational child care class at Kearns high. 2-- The class could be used as a for a career in medicine, pediatrics, or day care or said COPE director teaching, Elaine Burrows. The program offers experience, with the Kearns as a major part of high l, the unit. The open to children age 3 to 5, gives students training in a day care center, Kindercare, held at the school. Students also work with teachers at Western Hills elementary, tutoring in the classroom and working with the elementary school students. Each student spends 45 hours in actual training in the school system, Mrs. Burrows pointed out. The class teaches core information about child development, plus licensing laws, career exploration, instruction on how to run a pre preparatory class ss pre-scho- pre-schoo- . school, requirements for becoming an elementary schobr'teadher, help in placement for jobs right out of high school and information on opportunities in the professional field. Students are taught to prepare their own lesson plans, which they then put to use in the KHS and also at Western Hills. They learn by actually working with setchildren in a genuine ting. Children from the community are enrolled in the class and there is often a waiting list for placement. Field trips are taken to professional day care centers, to disadvantaged and disabilities institutes, family support centers, childrens and incenters, private fant therapy centers, said Mrs. Burrows, so students get a very thorough background and practical experience in the field.
