Show THE GREEN SHEET Thursday, May 22, 1986 To Control Cemetery Appearance - Lot Holders Propose Property Purchase We are TAYLORSVILLE. prepared to lead a major effort to make the cemetery a place of beauty to give peace of mind to those of us whose families are buried there if the property can be acquired. So states a letter to be distributed here Monday when families make Memorial Day visits to gravesites at Taylorsville Cemetery. Prepared by the Taylorsville Cemetery Lot Holders Committee, the letter represents a concern toward upkeep of the burial site, located in the 4600 block on Redwood Road. Noting that the committee has for more than three years attempted to negotiate with the present owner for purchase or improvement of the cemetery, the letter calls attention to the committees present intention. In our judgment, the only viable way to rehabilitate the cemetery from its present pitiable condition is to place the cemetery under the direction of a legally incorporated, it lot holders association, whose interests in the cemetery are not economic, but rather the desire to make the resting place of their loved ones a place of beauty and respect. Business people dont want to be left out in the cold. Putting City Hall in another location would, in the long run, be a blight for the business community. Thomas also suggested relocating the park to an intersection with less traffic, calling the present facility unsafe for children. I spent a lot of hours out there Councilman talking to people, Moss explained as he presented the results of a public opinion poll to the council following the public input. Out of 300 citizen signatures, 51 percent favored the Granger park site, 39 percent preferred City Hall to be built in another location, six percent favored none of the proposed options and eight percent said it did not matter to them where the building was located, he told them. Granger park, he reasoned, is a bad location for a park and City Hall should be a part of the business district. With these results in the public opinion poll, I cannot turn my back on them. Councilman Fisher, however, told fellow councilmen she had conducted her own opinon poll with startlingly different results. Out of 137 signatures, 132 voiced opposition to the Granger park site, one did not have an opinion, one preferred the park location and three others voiced comments I would not repeat in public, she said. Granger park is not the place for Councilman DeLange City Hall, commented. Ive consistently tried to represent the constituents of my district and I would be remiss if I were content to accept a shortsighted decision. Weve had a lot of input from a lot of different sources and many different sites have been considered, Mayor Embley commented while asking for a motion on the matter. Fisher moved the council uphold the Planning Commission decision denying a conditional use permit, but could not muster a majority to back her motion.
