Although it is customary to hold high school class reunions in years, members of the Cyprus class of 39 have chosen to observe theirs on the 47th anniversary of their graduation. The reason, those planning the affair say, is that 40 of their number have already gone on to that big class reunion in the sky, and up to now there has never been a reunion for this group. We decided not to d wait any longer, they said. Several months ago LaRee Hill Pehrson and Verlene Hale Yancey got together and decided if not now, when? So they called Sidney Matz, John Cannon and Pauline Bangerter Jensen and set about tracking down 150 people after 47 years. For some the trail was, and still is, very cold. But many of the class members are still living in the Salt Lake Valley. Through letters that were sent out, most have been found. The only ones missing now are Virginia Boicourt, Juanita Coon, Lucille Owens, Barbara Rothrock, r, Jackson Christofferson, Doug Margaret Pederson, Ellen Petersen, Orlo Richards, James Shiotoni, Esther Taylor, Richard . . . VerLene Hal Yancy and LaR Hill Pehrion display buttons, books, a graduation drss and other tokans from th Cyprus class of 39. This isnt a fancy dress affair, its just us depression kids getting together to talk about old times. And dont worry about not having graduated. We are inviting all of the kids who came aboard the Pirate ship as part of the Cyprus class of 1939. Mrs. Pehrson pointed out that those in the class of 39 had grown up in the depth of the great depression and, with war clouds gathering over Europe, faced an uncertain future. Many of those who came on board in 1937 had to drop out of school, not by choice, but because they had to help support their family. It was a time for panco soles, hand me down clothes, used books and no wheels. But what we lacked in money, we made up for in recreation because we had the Utah Copper Club, Saltair, Sunset and Black Rock Beach, and Coconut Grove where the big bands played when they came to town.
