MADE WITH ALL THESE GREAT BUTS! Cyprus high Spinnakers have earned a first place national award in dance to fulfill one of their goals for the year. The girls set the goal that they would be the first Spinnaker group to bring home first place in dance and were very excited when they reachsaid teacher ed their objective, Lori Rupp. The well known Spinnakers were organized 20 years ago, she noted, and began using the sabers, a trademark of the group, 17 years ago. During the past 10 years the group has been active in state and national competition, and has brought home a good selection of trophies, she added. There is no overall best award offered in drill team competition at the national level, because so many teams do not enter in all divisions, so the awards are given in each area, she explained. Divisions include dance, prop, novelty, officers and military. The Spinnakers have brought home two first place awards each year in various divisions and have taken ; first in props every year except the current contest, she said. The Spinnakers are known for their unique style, velvet military uniforms and hair styling, said Mrs. Rupp. Next year members of the group plan to use a French braid instead of the wiglet area residents are accustomed to seeing in local parades, she noted. The military style is traditional to the group, she explained, and included no dancing. The Spinnakers have entered the dance division only during the past seven years. I feel they are a very team and unique in the use of their sabers, style and very sharp military drill, she said. There were 48 teams entered in each event during the national competition held in Anaheim, Calif, the teacher noted. The Spinnakers took first place in dance, second in props, third in novelty and officer routine and fourth in military. I feel special recognition should be extended to Kris Kennard who took first place in the solo dance, against 68 entrants. She was great, she added. , well-round- Also representing Cyprus in the solo competition was Kaye Cole who took 12th place. xirTfitu Officers on this years team Include Lori Luckart, president; Robyn Aguilar, Kaye Cole, Robin Powell, Jodi Parker and Michelle Robison. - Christensen, Lindsay Utech To Bestow Honorary Degrees EXTRA LEAN . . .
