The French star's whirlwind publicity tour here in December, underwritten by Sony Pictures, was well worth the money. Joining Deneuve in the category are: Emma Thompson (the socially conscious sister in "Howards End"), Mary McDonnell (a with her angry paraplegic in John Sayles' "Pasbest-actre- ss late-com- er sion Fish"), Susan Sarandon (the sick-be- d mom in as a di"Lorenzo's Oil"), and rect result of Orion Pictures' year-en- d Michelle Pfeif-fe-r media blitz Dallas (as the platinum-blon- d hairdresser on the road in "Love Field"). For every omission (where's John Malkovich or, for that matter, anybody involved with MGM's "Of Mice and Men"?) there are four or five gutsy choices, beginning with double nominations for Eastwood as star and director of "Unforgiven" and including two nominad tions for Woody Allen's "Husbands and Wives." 1 can't even complain about Lee's or Reiner's misfortune. As in years past, there's as much to be confounded by as cheer over. I'm glad the academy didn't give in to all the hype and nominate Nicholson for his lackluster star turn in "Hoffa." I'm glad Denzel Washington was nominated for his fiery, charismatic Malcolm X, even if the movie around him was disjointed and overlong. I'm also glad Pfeiffer made it just under the wire: Her chirpy performance in "Love Field" is remarkably fragile and knowing. But where's Malkovich?
