For more information, call Environmental Health Service, Ext. 71168. By 2nd Lt. David G. Mistretta USAF Hospital, Hill At some point this school year, your child will bring home a letter stating someone in the classroom has head lice. You, in turn, will ask what are lice and what should be done if your child has lice or has come in contact with someone who has them? Lice are parasitic insects which are generally found in children's hair or on their clothes. Left untreated, they can cause a rash, severe itching, or a more serious skin infection. Lice spread by crawling onto the clothing of another person. Coatshats hung together in the classroom closet present an excellent opportunity for lice to spread. If you suspect a family member has been infected with lice or may have come in contact with someone who is, call the USAF Hospital, Hill, at Ext. 71847, for an appointment. If lice are present, a medicated shampoo will be prescribed to kill the lice and eggs. All clothing, towels and bed linens must be washed in hot water season continues Open Open season for civilian insurance benefits runs through Dec. 5.
