They include Jan Spearman By Transportation Operations Division microchips, microcircuits, discrete semiconductors, resistors and hybrid devices. In recent years, government and private industry have recognized the potential damage caused by ESD and have developed, through the Department of Defense, policies to prevent it. At first, the government was concerned with explosive devices and ammunition. Then, with the advent of more sophisticated systems, electronic equipment came under the prevention initiatives. These items were put into assemblies that eventually were installed in many of the instruments in aircraft, ships and tanks used for navigation as well as armament dis- - We have been aware of static electricity since the first bolt of lightning streaked across the sky. Later, man experimented with it and discovered he could create miniature lightning or static electricity. We are aware of static electricity when we walk across a carpet and touch the doorknob or come into contact with someone else. The definition of ESD is a transfer of electrostatic charge between bodies caused by direct contact or induced by an electrostatic field. Common sources of ESD include people, plain plastics, styrofoam coffee cups, tape, staples, paper, Quality of Life directorate. The Landing Gear Division is moving offices to the mezzanine in building 510 and the continues lower level is being renovated for a lunchroom. The Missile and Aircraft Division is upgrading offices in the north end of building 1526 and is working on a contract to have the parking lot and road resurfaced. The Aircraft Division is having the interior of building 225 repainted. By Marilyn Wright Directorate of Maintenance Since the inception of the Quality of Life pro- gram, the Plant Management Division has been the office of prime responsiblity for the program in the Maintenance Directorate. Plant management has provided material and manpower m support of 291 completed Quality of Life projects throughout the directorate. The Air Force Logistics Command judged some of those programs as outstanding during competition this year throughout the command. Quality of Life is an ongoing activity in the More projects are in the works including the purchase of system furniture for many offices throughout the directorate. This will provide about 1,500 modern workstations designed by professional consultants who are experienced at creating functional and attractive work environments using system furniture. charge. Since entering the computer age, we are handling, packaging and storing many items that are highly sensitive to damage by static electricity. e People who are involved with handling of be must items before or after packing trained. They need to be aware of the problem and the ways to prevent ESD damage. At Ogden Air Logistics Center, a control program has been deve- e loped to train and certify personnel handling items. It applies to all Ogden ALC organizations involved in the acquisition, design, specification, repair, test, assembly, receiving, shipping, storage and packaging of electronic items. With the guidance of the Directorate of Materiel Management, the Directorate of Distribution set up ESD protective handling and storage procedures. Training programs were established to promote awareness and ESD control through certification of personnel involved in processing and packaging e items. of Identification of the items to be protected, the amount of protection needed, and assurance that the materials being used are adequate are the first steps in prventing electrostatic damage. However, none of these are of any value if the people handling the items are not properly trained. A film was developed at Ogden ALC to show the proper packaging and handling of these items. Those interested in the awareness of this important subject may contact Bob Bennett, Ext. 74495; Blaine D. Nelson or Jan Spearman, Ext. 74022.
