Show Local Officials View Land Use Plannina County officials of Utah want to make sure that a state Land Use Act will serve to strengthen local goverment processes proces-ses and capabilities, not dimmish them. Members of the Utah Association of counties stressed this during a workshop on land use planning held at Utah State University, according to William (Bill) Dunn, Salt Lake County Commissioner and president of the Association. As-sociation. Those attending from Grand County were George H. (Hub) Newell and Dan Holyoak. The county officials endorsed a resolution prepared by thier Land Use Committee. It would provide for planning and guiding the development of land where there is greater than local concern. con-cern. Also, it would make provisions for developing develop-ing guidelines for local governments to use in long range planning. To implement these policies they asked that a seven-man State Land Use Commission be appointed ap-pointed representing the different interests anc areas of the state. This commission would have several major roles: help the state legislature legisla-ture designate areas ol critical concern to the state; review requests from local governments for assistance regarding land use matters; review and comment on development develop-ment permits submitted by local governments; and review and help assure as-sure local compliance with provisions of the act. The county officials also voted to draft a resolution re-solution calling for a lengthened term of office of county commissioners. commission-ers. They said this was more in line with the terms of office of the elected el-ected officials and to reduce re-duce the frequent turnover turn-over and necessity of new orientation and training. They proposed that the term of office be extended ex-tended from the present two years to four years, Dunn said. |
