Show Page 6 The OGDEN VALLEY NEWS Volume II, Issue VI March 2000 COMMENTS: A YEAR IN REVIEW The Ogden Canyon Club (OCC) Board and members have seen another busy and productive year come to a close. This privately funded and non-political organization has been an active participant in several community awareness, environmental, zoning, and technological concerns and issues affecting the canyon, sprinkled with “canyon” awareness activities. Also, the club is now registered with the State of Utah as a non-profit organization and can accept donations, as reflected on the Membership Form. Successful activities sponsored by the OCC this last year, and achievements: • The OCC booth at Weber State University’s Community Earth Day; National Trails Day; IRS Volunteer Day; and the 1999 Volunteer Community Fair provided an opportunity to share our involvement in the preservation and restoration of the canyon. • The feeling of canyon ownership is growing as witnessed at the Fall and Spring clean-ups as volunteers from the local area and Clearfield Job Corps, Jobs Daughters, Demolay, Reflections, local high school and university students filled bag after bag—enough to fill an 8-ton dump truck–with every type of litter imaginable. The removal of Dyers Woad from the road and hill sides was also vigorously pursued. The continental breakfast by Rainbow Gardens, the U.S. Forest Service mascots Smokey Bear and Hooty Owl entertaining during the free high-noon cook-out at The Oaks, and the drawing for prizes made for one fantastic time. • US WEST Wireless cellular telephone service is coming to the canyon. Briefings were held to ensure all environmentally, technological, architectural, and landscaping issues were considered to maintain the natural and pristine beauty of the canyon. • The Director, Weber County Planning Commission fielded questions and answers at an open canyon forum regarding “Rules Of The Canyon.” With continual commercial and residential growth as a concern, residential planning ordinances and zoning laws were discussed. • During August, 87 hardy hikers trekked up the Indian Trail to hear Associate Professor Dr. Yonkee of Weber State University, Chairman, Geoscience discuss the “Geological Wonders of Ogden Canyon” and dine on sloppy-joe’s, ice cream and cold soda-pop. Due to popular demand, a repeat will be held around the same time this year. • Plans to remove debris from the Ogden River are well underway with support from the 146th Army Reserve Transportation Division. This will provide a safer environment for fishermen as well as non-motorized water craft. Notification of the cleanup date will be publicized through the local news media. • Weber County Pathways Executive Director Geoffrey Ellis gave an overview of their activities, trails-related issues, and plans to create a world-class trail system. Future hopes are that pathways will be built in Ogden Canyon connecting Ogden and Ogden Valley pathways. Members of the OCC board are involved with both Pathways committees. • The year 1999 came to a close with a “Canyon Christmas Social.” THANKS TO ALL OUR OCC MEMBERS AND FRIENDS OF THE CANYON WHO SUPPORT AND HELP US LIVE UP TO OUR MOTTO—”FOR THE PRESERVATION AND RESTORATION OF OGDEN CANYON.” OCC CALENDAR: February Board Meeting February 15 7:00 p.m. The Oaks Agenda To Be Announced Annual Membership and Election Dinner March 21 6:30 p.m. - Social; 7:00 p.m. Dinner GrayCliff Lodge Cost: $12.00 per person (includes tax/gratuity) HEADS-UP: Spring Ogden Canyon Clean-Up May 13 (Rain date May 20) More to come.
