Show Volume II , Issue VI Page 11 The OGDEN VALLEY NEWS March 2000 The Horse Whisperer Dew Wright has a great love and understanding of horses. He definitely is our own “Horse Whisperer,” only more! Dew is completely devoted to teaching and training both man and horse. Mr. Wright has been involved with horses since he was a young boy. His father taught him to handle and work with horses, but his father did not teach him that horses have fears and feelings, much like people. Dew did learn respect for the horse, and to understand that as a large animal, people can easily be hurt by them. What Dew’s father did not understand, nor taught, was that a horse is a prey animal; and humans are predators. Dew, after investing many long hours in reading and studying, and having the privilege of attending clinics instructed by such great horsemen as Ray Hunt, Tom Dorrence, Pat Parelli, Dr. Robert Miller, Richard Shrake and many others equally knowledgeable, learned many interesting facts and much knowledge about the equine. Dew has compiled all of this knowledge, along with first hand horse experience, to develop his own all-encompassing equine program, for the novice and the experienced. He knew that we could always learn something new. His program teaches and trains both horse and man. Over the past 16 years, Dew learned that the horse, as we know it, has a brain; and is actually capable of thinking things through, much as we do. He put together a program that, first of all, helped Dew; second, helped the horses he has had the privilege of starting; and third, has given him the opportunity to help the people he has started colts with. Dew also works with problem horses, providing understanding for the horse/human relationship, which is very unnatural at best. Mr. Wright tries to help people understand that the horse, being a prey animal, is very cautious of predators (humans). Thus, approach the horse in a non-threatening way that won’t instill fear. Otherwise, their natural instinct is to fight or choose flight. Getting past the human/horse introduction, a bond of trust can be developed. This bond is necessary to effectively teach horses how to get along in our world. Humans can help themselves. Most people need help understanding, or becoming aware, that horses have feelings that can be bolstered or hurt; much like our own. If we are not sensitive to this, the horse owner may find that the horse, treated improperly, is unwilling to work for them. In Dew’s horsemanship clinics, he teaches people that the horse has six distinct zones. He gives each zone a number or a name and a very important purpose in the training and teaching of the colt or horse. A horse can do six things naturally; they can Subscriptions available for out of area residents at $15.00 annually. Send payment with mailing address to: go right, go left, go up, go down, go forward and backward. If we understand this, we can apply this to our zoneology or study of the six different zones. You start through games or exercises; teaching zone one to go up or down, right or left, etc. You begin with basic elementary techniques to keep your horses from being scared or troubled. This program identifies how and why a horse works, and reacts. Clinics have been organized in an effort to share this information with horse enthusiasts in this area. Dew starts many colts each month. It is important for colt owners to learn about the horse/human relationship, and to learn to communicate and teach their colt in harmony and without fear; becoming a true partner with the owner. Therefore Dew encourages people to come and get started, along with their colt. Dew has many types of programs planned for this year. For example, his spring warm-up series. This spring the focus will be on the horses we have neglected during the winter, and to start a few colts. During the summer, there will be summer games. In a natural setting, participants will be able to test themselves and their horses on their progress. Many trail courses will be set up with varying degrees of obstacles—both for the horse and the human. Hopefully a fun time can be had by all while having a fun time practicing back country horsemanship skills, and sharpening our camping and overnight on horseback skills. Our first spring warm-up clinic will be held at the Red Rock Ranch on March 18. Dr. David Moss from Associated Veterinarians will be there to give instruction on horse care in the spring, and all through the year. Noel Koford, a local farrier, will teach hoof care and maintenance techniques for your horse. Dr. Moss and Noel Koford will begin speaking around 10:00 a.m. and Dew will start his first clinic at 2:00 p.m. and be completed by about 6:00 p.m. This course is free to the public. After a short break, those who are interested in staying may join in around the campfire for a good old-fashioned cowboy sing-along.
