Show HUNTING, Wednesday, September THE HERALD. Provo, Utah, 26, 1990 - Page 5 amascus Blades have kept quality tradition alive BY REX C. INFANGER Herald Correspondent The first tool I remember receiving as a young man was a German pocket knife from my grandfather. It was just a small pen knife, but it had an embossed floral design on the sides and was a source of great pride. That knife helped give me an appreciation of the art of knife making. Art seems to have certain works that stand out as the best. In sculpting, one thinks of David or Venus. In painting, it is the Mona Lisa or Blue Boy. In the art of knives, it is the Damascus Blade. Limited editions sell for thousands Damascus Blades are made by stacking alternating layers of high carbon steel and mild steel. This steel sandwich is heated in a forge, removed and hammered into a solid mass. The mass is then reheated in the forge, folded over on itself and hammered into a second as well as the Damascus bar stock can be mass. This process is repeated over and over again until a Damascus bar or billet is formed. W.F. Bill Mor-aa master bladesmith and the founder of the American Bladesmith Society, is the man responsible for bringing this ancient technology to modern America. e steel at the cutting edge and the layers that are there are much thicker and do not accept an edge Damascus U.S.A. makes a full of finished knives that ure beautiful. The oriental I.um Tanto is an exceptional piece of art and retails for $395.00. time to make these functional works of art. Damascus U.S.A. from Edenton, North Carolina, is one of the few companies in America that are willing to devote the time. Damascus makes billets for stock removal, rough forged-to-shap- e knife blanks, finished knives and swords. A finished, e Damascus Knife blank generally costs from $140.00 to $199.00 for a 104-inc- h Bowie. A scimitar hand-forgin- ing. This process gives a very beautiful, acceptable knife, but does not take full advantage of the Damascus bar. There are less layers of n, forged-to-shap- knives. The second way of making a g Damascus knife is by a blade to shape. Hand forging the billet to the rough shape does two things. First, it aligns the steel with the shape of the blade and, secondly, it compresses more steel layers in the area of the cutting edge. Compressing the layers on the cutting edge is called packing and packing is what gives the Damascus Blade an excellent cutting edge. made into knives in one of two ways. The first way is a method called stock removal. Stock removal is done by cutting a blade down to the basic desired shape then finishing it by grinding and polish- sword can cost $795.00. Knife blanks are finished except for the handle. Blade knives take a Damascus long time to make and there are very few knife making companies in the world willing to take the line Recently, Damascus U.S.A. build a stunning Bowie knife to celebrate Reagan's eight years in office. The knife is over 12 inches long, is in a limited edition series of 50 and costs over $2200 definitely a collector's piece of art. forged-to-shap- 36-in- Check out equipment before it's too Bc&t Prices Good thru Sat. Sept. 29th By REX C. INFANGER Herald Correspondent friend's tent, poles and stakes were loaned to some young women for a church outing a short time ago. The tent, stakes and most of the poles came back. He is lucky because he took the time to check it out before he left on his next trip and saved himself a lot a headache. Equipment, or the lack of equipment, can often make or break a hunting trip. Several years ago, a friend and I woke up with nearly f inch of water in the tent. I hadn't taken the time to seal the seams so in the water came. We were fortunate because both of us had good sleeping equipment Qualofil sleeping bags and thermarests, so only our feet and the sides of the bags were wet. Then you have to call or write the company to get the repair completed. Lanterns are not complicated, but should be checked for problems. Globes are usually the first things broken on a lantern and replacement globes are available at several of the local sporting goods stores. There are several other items on a lantern that can cause it to not burn or to burn improperly. The tank cap can be lost or the seal on the cap goes hard. When this happens, the lantern won't hold the necessary pressure, so it won't stay lit. Generators on a lantern go bad after time. When this starts to happen, they burn dim or won't burn at all.
